A post medieval silver shilling of the Commonwealth of England (1649-1660), mint-mark sun (1649-1657; North 2724), dated 1653 on the reverse, mint: Tower of London. Ref: North 1991: 206. Commonwealth shillings are not common finds and this is the first to be recorded from Cornwall with the PAS. It is also interesting to note that its two faces are not stamped directly opposite each other (12 o'clock die axis) or run from end to end (6 o'clock axis), which is usual for coins. Uncertain initial mark. Copying mint of London. The coin is extremely worn and damaged rendering much detail illegible. Much of the original silver coated surface has also been eroded.
