Both sides of the coin are rubbed smooth indicating a secondary function as a love token. DUR-735B12 notes that: "Love tokens' were made using coins dating from the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) to the reign of Ann (1702-1714) with some Georgian examples and some as late as the Victorian period.
