A post medieval Venetian coin; a soldino of Agostino Barbarigo (1486-1501) made of an unusual alloy of gold and silver which appears golden coloured instead of the usual silver. This design was used by Barbarigo before he changed over to the new (and much more common) soldino design. However, the style overall is bad, especially the lettering and the mint mark of N over M to the right of the doge is not listed in the detailed catalogue (Barrie Cook pers comm.) This, and the unusual metal suggests that it is some form of contemporary copy or an unknown variety. The coin is discoloured …

A complete Venetian silver soldino of Doge Leonardo Loredan (AD 1501-1521). The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change: soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.

Silver soldino issued by Doge Leonardo Loredan (1501-1521) in Venice. Venetian soldini arrived during the 15th century with the annual trading fleet and were used as halfpennies, since they were in short supply, but as they were closer in value to a farthing, the government tried to suppress them.
