A cast copper alloy coin (limesfalsum), copying an as of Commodus (AD 180-192) (Reece Period 14), with an unclear reverse. It appears that the coin was produced from a flawed clay mould.   Limesfalsa ('Frontier Forgeries') were first identified on the Rhine and Danube Frontiers.  An increasing number have been found in Britain and recorded with the PAS Database.  Two pieces from the same mould, found in Hertfordshire, do suggest that they were also produced in Britain.  It appears that many of these coins were actually produced in the AD 230s to …

A very worn copper-alloy Roman coin. The size of the coin indicates that this is probably an as, while the obverse image bears some resemblance to Commodus (Augustus AD 180-192). The reverse image appears to show a figure standing right, placing something on a column. RIC no. 588 for Commodus (APOL PALAT P M TR P XVI COS VI S C), an as minted at Rome in AD 191, provides a possible match for this coin. It measures 28.4mm in diameter, 3.1mm thick and weighs 10.8g.
