A clipped, pierced and worn silver coin; a post Medieval halfpenny of Henry VIII (AD 1509-1547), second coinage dating to 1526-1544, unclear initial mark. London mint. North (1991) no: 1815. The coin has been pierced in the middle of one reverse quarter, through the king's eye. There is displaced metal on both faces, perhaps suggesting the hole was punched twice, once from each face. The hole is less than a millimetre in diameter. The coin is 9.8mm diameter (clipped) and0.6mm thick. 0.3g.

Withers recognizes a number of sub-varieties of this coin with variations in legend, style of lettering and placement of stops. This example also appears to have a spelling error in the legend, as the final word, which is usually SPINA or SPIA, appears to read SPIE. Reference: North, volume 2, number 1815.
