A fragment of an early medieval Islamic silver coin. It weighs 0.44g. It measures 11.88mm x 11.39mm x 0.82mm. It dates from the Islamic Abbasid period (750 - 1258), and probably from the 8th or 9th century. Only a fragment of the coin survives. This coin was found with other objects suggesting an Early Medieval trading site, and so is probably an ancient loss.

A corroded copper-alloy medieval Portuguese coin; a ceitil of Duarte I (1433 - 1438) minted in Lisbon. It is 21.3 mm in diameter and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.68gm. The coin is very thin and corroded probably because it was found on a beach. See C.M. Almeida do Amaral, Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas (Lisbon 1977); p.315, nos 958ff. Edward Besly comments that there are few ceitils from English find spots, though the ceitils of Duarte's successor Afonso V (1438-81) are very common finds all across S Wales.

A lead-alloy token. It is probably intended to be circular, but actually measures 21.5mm by 20.1mm and is 4.1mm thick. It weighs 9.63gm. There is a design on both faces but its interpretation is not clear. It is basically six radiating lines, but they meet at one side rather than in the middle, and they do not all spring from one place. In the largest angle is an extra curved line. Little is know about the precise date and function of these tokens. A late medieval or post medieval date seems most likely. See “Leaden Tokens and Tallies” by Edward Fletcher for more information.

A copper alloy post-Medieval coin; a Scottish Bodle, probably of Charles II and James VII (1677-79). The Bodle appears during the reigns of Charles I, II, and James VII. Although the legend is illegible, the Thistle and crown over crossed sword and sceptre seem most like the Charles II and James VII issue. Measures 24.4mm x 25.4mm x 0.9mm, weighing 2.84g. A copper alloy Medieval coin weight. It is a uniface round weight, bearing a figure on horseback riding right with a sword in hand. It is 14.5mm x 14.2mm x 2.9mm, and weighs 3.38g. This weight was probably French and made for a cheval of Jean II (1350-1364) or Charles V (1364-1380). The weight is without a legend. This weight is similar to an example in 'Identifying coin weights found in Britain' by P and B R Withers (p.32).

A silver late Medieval coin; a double petard of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467-1477). The coin has a diameter of 26.8mm and is 0.8mm thick. It weighs 2.94g. Similar coins are recorded on the PAS database. In 1469 a monetary convention between Duke Charles and King Edward IV made the former's coinage in the Low Countries legal tender in England. In practice, only the double patard established itself in currency, with a formal valuation equal to the silver groat, i.e. fourpence. (Although the fineness of the coin was below the level of sterling, the weight of the coin was high…

A lead alloy token dating from the late medieval period or early post medieval period. The token is oval and is 16.1mm long, 14.2mm wide and 3.9mm thick. It is very worn and the design is almost unintelligible but it appears to have been a cross like those found on coinage of the period. The token has a dark brown patina. Similar examples can be seen on page 40 – 41 of “Leaden Tokens and Tallies” by Fletcher (2005).
