Copper alloy Dutch duit from Gelderland, probably minted in Harderwijk in 1720. The obverse legend IN DEO SP NOS in full should read 'In Deo spes nostra', meaning 'Our hope in God'. GELRIAE (AE ligated) on the reverse refers to Gelderland. Ref: Ge 114 in D. Purmer (2009) 'Handboek van de Nederlandse Provinciale Muntslag 1568-1795 Deel II van de voormalige provincies, Steden en heerlijkheden alsmede de gouden, zilveren en koperen afslagen. Early modern 'duit' of the Dutch province of Zeeland, dating from the 18th century. The duit is inscribed ZELAN/DIA on the obverse and has 'LUCTOR ET EMERGO' on the reverse, surrounding the arms of Zeeland. The Latin motto of the province of Zeeland, "Luctor et Emergo" translates to "I struggle and emerge" (victorious, presumably!).
