Treasure report from Dr Barrie J. Cook: I have examined two coins found at Newton Bromswold, Northamptonshire. Both are English gold coins of the denomination of half-sovereign (= 10 shillings or half a pound). Both were also issued in the reign of King Edward VI (1547-53), despite the fact that the name and image on one of the coins is of his father Henry VIII. When Edward acceeded, his government had to consider how to deal with the debased coinage introduced by Henry in 1544 and, for a while, carried on in the style of the late king. The details of the coins are as follows: 1. …

Copper alloy jeton, probably German. O. Figure of a man standing behind a table on which is a cloth set out in columns on which are jettons. The man is wearing a flat cap and garment wit the puffed sleeves characteristic of the sixteenth. To each side of him is a band of gadrooned decoration the junctions of the loops being marked with lis. R. This shows what is likely to be a depiction of a horn book bearing the alphabet in Roman letters, I and J being a single symbol.

I have examined two coins reported found at Gayton, Northamptonshire. Both are silver pennies of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland), and will thus have a fineness of the official sterling silver standard, 92.5% fine metal. Their details are as follows. James I, Second Coinage (1605-19) 1. Penny (fragmentary), initial mark rose (1605-6), wt: 0.37, North 2106/1 2. Penny (2 fragments), no initial mark, combined wt: 0.59g, North 2106/1 The two coins are of good silver and would certainly have been in circulation together, so the question is whether they are likel…

Worn copper-alloy disc, probably an 18th century penny. The coin is too worn to determine any detail however. The item has been bent, and it is likely that it was deliberately bent to be used as a love token, a practice common between the 17th and 19th centuries (Bailey 1992, page 46).

A copper alloy token, probably dating from the 17th century. One side of the token bears the initials HB in the centre with a star above and below them. The legend on this side of the token appears to read 'OF ...ALDWICH' or something similar. On the other side of the token the name HENRY can just be made out, although the rest of the token is too worn to glean any information from.

A large lead token. The token is very worn, yet the image of a Cavalier can just be made out on one side. This token was found in the same area as buttons, musket shot and other metallic items at a location very close to the Civil War battlefield of Naseby. It is likely that all of these finds relate to the battle.
