Square copper alloy double sided coin weight. On the obverse is a shield, possibly containing three lis, with a T or crowned lis to the right. This suggests it is for the French ecu issued 1423 to 1474 which continued to circulate in Britain into the 16th century (Withers and Withers p.39). On the reverse is a hand between the intials H/[...] indicating it is from Antwerp and made in the later 16th century c.1550-1603 (ibid p.60). Square copper alloy weight for a Spanish 2 escudos. The front has a design of a cross potent in a double quadrilobe all within a pellet circle. The reverse is blank but the obverse style suggests it may be of French manufacture. Escudo were first issued in 1566 and continued in use until 1833. The weight is 14.9mm by 14.5mm by 3.9mm thick and wieghs 5.72 grams. One escudos weighed 3.38 grams, two 6.76 grams. The figure has a reddish-brown colouring. The obverse is equally worn but the letters A E // HTA // 1749 can be seen.
