A cast lead (?alloy) probable post-medieval token. The object is sub-circular with one flat side (with recessed design) and one side with a raised design. The flatter side has a very precise, recessed design of two figures, standing or walking right. The man on left is wearing a coat, breeches, waistcoat and probably a wig (Zelina Garland, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, pers. comms.). A complete cast lead token, probably dating to the Post Medieval period, between AD 1600 - 1700 (diameter: 20.5mm; thickness: 2.5mm; weight: 6.5g). The token is circular in plan and flat in section. On one side of the artefact, it is decorated with an irregularly shaped six-armed star or sexfoil. A Post-medieval copper alloy coin weight, dating to AD 1604-1619. The weight is circular in plan and flat in cross section, and is stamped bifacially. One face depicts a double arched crown surmounting XI over S. The other depicts a right facing bust with the insciption: [I R M] BRITAN. Both are within a pelleted border. Dimensions: diameter 16.5mm; thickness 2.5mm; weight 3.85g. Such coin weights correspond to the double crown of James I's second coinage, comparable examples can be seen recorded on this database, for example LEIC-B5F893.

Post-medieval coin hoard from Newton-with-Scales, Lancashire (2004T30) I have examined a group of coins reported found at Newton with Scales in January 2004. The coins are all official English issues of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92/5% fine metal.The coins consist of three denominations: 11 groats (fourpences) of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, and a sixpence and 7 threepences of Elizabeth, amounting to a sum with a face value of five shillings and fivepence, which would be something like £20-30 in modern terms.The coins would certainly have circulated together, and the lim…
