Brass Irish coin weight for a Portuguese gold coin, the 8 escudos, or 'double johannes' as it was known in this country. The numbers on the obverse represent D (Dwt or pennyweight) 18 and G (gr or grain) 10 ½ in arabic ciphers which were used for gold coin weights. The weight is dated to 1737 on reverse. It looks to have been struck from a worn die. The weight should be 28.67 g in weight, so it falls just short of this. Withers (1995) illustrates a similar example on page 55, which is dated 1737.
