A very worn and clipped Post Medieval silver coin of unknown monarch. The coin has been clipped down to the inner circle and therefore the legend has been removed with it. The obverse is largely blank but the reverse shows a quartered shield with the rampant lion of Scotland in the upper right quadrant. This was adopted by James I and would date the coin to the reign of James I (1603-1625 AD) or Charles I (1625-1649).

An incomplete and extremely abraded Post Medieval Tudor period silver coin. No detail can be seen on the obverse but the image of the Royal shield and the part legend PO[...]/DEV[...] can just be made out on the reverse. This legend is probably a variant of POSUI DEUM ADIUTOREM MEUM which translates as "I have made God my helper". The legend was in use on various coin denominations throughout the Tudor period but judging by the size and weight of this coin it is most likely a groat or sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603 AD). There are three holes in the flan of the coin all of which a…

Copper alloy counterstamped coin. The coin is highly corroded and no part of the original design is visible. It is counterstamped VIII with a small H or M above and the second and third II appear to be interupted by a circular counterstamp. It is probably a 8 maravedis of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, but countermarked later under Felipe IV's reign (1621-1665) as an 8 maravedis 'resellado' which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'. The '8' or 'VIII' stamps refer to the denomination of the coin. They are often stamped several times with the value, crowns and other marks. The coin is sli…

Cast circular uniface lead alloy token. The token has a raised design of initials, probably N or W followed by a second, illegible letter, on one side. The reverse appears blank. It is 19.9mm in diameter, 5.8mm thick and weighs 9.54 grams. It is unusually thick and pitted and may have a higher than usual tin content. Lead tokens were often made locally for a wide range of uses and those with initals are hard to date precisely but are generally Post Medivela in date (1500-1850 AD).
