Copper alloy coin weight, square and double sided with a ship with a rose on the side and an R above the bow on one face and a hand flanked by the initials B/(B)on the other. The ship and rose indicates it is for weighing a rose noble or ryal. The hand indicates it was made in Antwerp and the B/(B) indicates the maker, probably Bernaert Bommaerts who was active 1610-1650 AD (Withers and Withers 1995:60). On the reverse is Xs (for 10 shillings) under a crown with a crowned I stamped upper left. This is a British made weight for an Angel produced under James I (Withers and Withers 1995:22). It is 14.1 by 13.7mm and 2.7mm thick; it weighs 3.65 grams, 56.2 grains. Part of a Post-Medieval spur side with a heart-shaped terminal. The side, oval in section, is seperated from the terminal by a raised transverse collar. There are two circular holes through the terminal and the edges of the terminal are bevelled from the front. Surviving length 34.2mm, widthe 12.5mm, thickness, 2.2mm and weight 2.10 grams. For three broadly similar examples, considered to date to the 17th century, see B. Ellis in Ellis, P. (ed.) (1993) Beeston Castle, 165-9, fig. 114 nos. 23-5.

This suggests it is for the French ecu issued 1423 to 1474 which continued to circulate in Britain into the 16th century (Withers and Withers p.39). Square copper alloy weight for a Spanish 2 escudos. The front has a design of a cross potent in a double quadrilobe all within a pellet circle. The reverse is blank but the obverse style suggests it may be of French manufacture. Escudo were first issued in 1566 and continued in use until 1833. The weight is 14.9mm by 14.5mm by 3.9mm thick and wieghs 5.72 grams. One escudos weighed 3.38 grams, two 6.76 grams. Copper alloy coin weight probably of James I (1603-1625) possibly Charles I (1625-1649), Crowned V with small s below on the reverse. The crowned V stands for 5 shillings and sugests it is for a quarter laurel or crown (minted 1619-1657). It measures 14mm in diameter is 1.7mm thick and weighs 1.7grams, 26.23 grains. A full weight quarter laurel was 35 grains but weights were made for the legal minimum weight of the coin which was slightly less and this weight has probably become lighter due to corrosion.

A flat and square copper alloy coin weight. Much of the detail is still clear. On the obverse there is a crown with the letter C surmounted by a crown to the left of it. Underneath, the numerals XXII, and below these the letter S. The reverse is very worn but you can make out what might have been a bust of the King. These markings indicate that this weight dates from the reign of James I (AD 1612-19). It was used to weigh Unites of James’ revalued 2nd coinage. The surface of the weight is pitted and is a dark brownish-green colour.
