A copper alloy shilling of James II, (Irish) gun money coinage, small size variant, June 1690. Coin reference: Seaby, 1984, 6582G. As discussed in record references KENT-F12E34 and HAMP-483F40, during 1689 and 1690, James II operated a military campaign in Ireland from where he planned to mount an invasion of England, having been deposed by Mary and William of Orange. During this time, copper alloy emergency coinage was issued by James II to pay the troops. The use of secondary metal for the coinage (e.g. from cannons, etc) gave rise to the name "gun money". The coins include the…

The token is circular in plan and flat in section and is decorated on both sides. On one side, there is a rather crude 6-pointed star. On the opposing side, there appear to be a central recessed line running across the token's diameter with possible illegible numbers ot either side, although one of these numbers may read a '6' or '9'. Overall, the artefact is in a worn and corroded condition with a patchy dark green patina.
