A post medieval copper alloy coin: one soldo dating to the 18th century. This coin was issued at the time when the Republic of Venice controlled part of present day Greece. The obverse has the inscription CORF/CEFA/ZAN for Corfu, Cephalonia and Zante. These are three of the Ionian Islands which were until 1797 part of the Republic of Venice. The obverse has the winged lion of St Mark, the symbol for Venice. The inscription reads 'S.MARC.V*'. This Edward I silver penny has a crowned bust and flattened, Maltese style, initial cross (Cross Pattee). The Initial cross conforms with North’s Class x a-e type (North 1960,19, figure 18). The drapery is drawn in the style defined by North as Class IIIa (North1960, 19 figure 21). The side fleur on the crown conforms with the early class III (North 1960, 20 figure 28). The reverse inscription reads [CIVITAS LINCOL] indicating the coin was minted in Lincoln. This mint identification is restricted to Class III (c,d,f,g) (North 1960, 20).
