A complete cast copper alloy square double-sided coin weight probably for a rose ryal of James I issued between 1604-19 (Withers & Withers 1995, 41 and 68-69). The weight indicated by Withers for this type of coin weight is 196.5gr. However, due to the loss of some of the material due to corrosion the weight of this Isle of Wight find is 169.5gr (10.99g).

The weight for a half angel during this period was 35.5 grains. This Isle of Wight find weighs 28.6 grains (1.86g). The difference in weight can probably be accounted for by the loss of metal due to corrosion.

The difference in weight can probably be accounted for by the loss of metal due to wear and corrosion. The edges are particularly corroded.

An incomplete copper alloy coin of Philip IV of Spain (1621-65), revalidated to 8 maravedis. Probably issued 1624, although not certain as the date is situated to the right side of the shield on the reverse which is illegible due to corrosion. A similar, though smaller type was issued in 1625 and 1626. In the 1630s – 1650s period these coins were countermarked to revalidate them. The countermark usually consisted of a figure 8, or VIII in a small circle and sometimes a second mark, which gave the date.
