A post medieval copper alloy coin from India. Shailendra Bhandare of the Ashmolean Museum writes: 'The coin is a Paisa of Gwalior State, Gwalior Fort mint, struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Akbar II, during the reign of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia (1796-1825). Details of date etc are not seen due to the poor condition of the coin.' The coin has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 5.5mm thick. It weighs 8.6g. It is fairly common to find Indian coins in Britain, probably because they were brought here by people serving in the Empire in India.

Tao Kuang T'ung Pao cash of the Canton Mint of Kwangtung Province. This Chinese coin dates to the time of the Opium war which took place in 1839. Although the import of opium to China had been banned by the Qing government in 1796, the British went on and even increased its export to China. To try to stop this the Imperial Commissioner attempted to confiscate and destroy the illegal opium in Canton, however his attempts were largely unsuccesful.
