Clipped copper alloy 8 maravedis of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, dated to 1611 on reverse, but countermarked later in under Felipe IV's reign (1621-1665) as an 8 maravedis 'resellado' which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'.
The coin has the mark 'R X' on the obverse for REX and the various '8' or 'VIII' stamps refer to the denomination of the coin. Just above the RX mark, but upside-down, is another countermark which reads 165[], which gives the countermarking date of either 1654 or 1655 as one of the documented dates in Felipe IV's reign (John Naylor pers comm).

Cast zinc alloy replica or copy of a medallion or perhaps a fragment of a medallion, with the busts of William and Mary (1688-1694) facing each other on the obverse and a coat of arms, similar to that used on their guineas and half guineas, on the reverse. The busts are each within a beaded oval which are linked together by an attachment which may mimic a clasp or hinge so that the impression is meant to look like an open locket.
The replica has been made up to two halves which have been glued together, and this tacky material still survives around the edge of the object. The coat o…

Cast copper alloy coin weight, square in plan, and trapezoidal in profile and section. On the base of the weight there is a cross potent within a quadrilobe which is in turn within a circle of pellets.
This symbol and the weight suggest that it was used to weigh against a Spanish coin, probably the Spanish four escudos gold coin which weighs about 13.52 g. It was likely produced in Amsterdam, when the Netherlands were a colony of Spain during the 17th to 18th century. The four escudos was minted from the reign of King Felipe II (1556-1598) of Spain, to King Felipe V (1700-1746).…

Incomplete copper alloy 4 maravedis of Philip IV (1621-1665) of Spain with crowned shield on obverse, countermarked with a IIII under Philip IV in 1655. The date 1655 is on the edge of the coin, to the right of the crowned shield with a lion rampant. The reverse has another countermark of VI above a border, beyond which is a larger IIII. The coin could originally have been an 8 maravedis of Philip III (1598-1621) of Spain, which would have been presumably revalued as 6 maravedis in 1636 and then again to 4 maravedis in 1655. Brass Irish coin weight for a Portuguese gold coin, the 8 escudos, or 'double johannes' as it was known in this country. The numbers on the obverse represent D (Dwt or pennyweight) 18 and G (gr or grain) 10 ½ in arabic ciphers which were used for gold coin weights. The weight is dated to 1737 on reverse. It looks to have been struck from a worn die. The weight should be 28.67 g in weight, so it falls just short of this. Withers (1995) illustrates a similar example on page 55, which is dated 1737.

Renaissance cast copies of Roman coins in a strip of three coins attached to each other, each with only one face.
The central piece with a bust of a man is almost certainly taken from a Roman coin, possibly of the Flavian period (c.AD 69-96) or the Tetrarchy (c.AD 294-310).
The outer roundels with the two horseman have no recognisable prototype, although the foreshortening of the rider on the right depicts a Renaissance technique not adopted in the Classical period. This then points to a date in the Early Modern period, probably the 16th or 17th century.
The purpose of the…

Cast copper alloy coin weight with the letters L . S above the numbers 3 . 12 on both the obverse and reverse of the weight. These numbers equate to the value of £3 and 12 shillings and would have been the largest weight in a set of up to eleven weights used from c.1760-1773 to weigh the Portuguese moidore and 'joe' series of gold coins. This one was particularly used for the double johannes which equated to 8 escudos. Weights like this one, stamped with incuse letters and ciphers, were made by watch-makers, jewellers and other traders who bought blanks from wholesalers and stamped th…
