Circular lead token, the face is decorated with a crowned fleur-de-lis in between the letters I R, the reverse is plain. Tokens baring a crowned fleur-de-lis were used as coin weights from the reign of Henry VI for the noble, half noble and quarter noble. Although most are manufactured in copper alloy there is one example made of lead (Biggs 1990, 72). Furthermore, I R is an abbreviation for James I Rex, therefore this is most likely a coin weight from the reign of James I. Biggs N, Coin-weights in England up to 1588. A bifacial lead token. This token is unusual as it is similar to boy bishop tokens of the 15th century - the obverse has a design of four annulets around a central pellet bounded by a solid circle - between this circle and another outer circle is an inscription which is too worn to decipher. The reverse has the initials WL beneath a solid horizontal line - the design above this line is again illegible. The syle of the reverse suggests a 17th century date for this token and not 15th.

A lead alloy token of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), struck c. 1574 (North 1991: 140, ref: 2063). North comments: ‘There exist a number of lead or pewter pieces which have in the past been described as patterns or tokens. It is more probable however that they were political medalets or counters, as some would appear to relate to Mary, Queen of Scots, and the workmanship on most is rather crude. They are normally found in London, and were struck about 1574 (North 1991: 140).

A lead alloy miscast token, probably Post Medieval (1500-1700 AD). The two halves of the mould failed to unite creating this token which has its two halves overlapping. Both sides have the initials WR in retrograde contained within an upper and lower border of vertical lines, all in high relief. Each half is approximately 19.4mm in diameter, and about 75% of each is conjoined, leaving an overhang on each side of around 25% of the token. Therefore, the total width of the find is 24.03mm. The token is only slightly worn and has a pale buff-brown patina. Dimensions: length: 20.7mm; w…

On one side the design is a boat on the sea surrounded by a nonsense legend on one side; the other side has a heraldic shield inside a border of radiate symbols with differing cross-bars. Both of these borders are perhaps imitating a written legend. The token has a dark grey-black patina. Egan (2005) illustrates tokens with either a boat, p. 168 ref. 899, or an heraldic device, p. 168 ref. 894, but not a token displayi…

One disc from the two-part cloth seal is missing and the tab which connects the two has been twisted and is now lying flat against the remaining disc. Cast lead alloy circular uniface weight or token. The item has the capital letters I G or (1 G) stamped into one side, the other is blank. It is unusual to see stamped decoration which has to be done individually on a token as most tokens were cast into a decorated mould so any design is raised and the moulds could be reused. Stamping is much more common on weights and it maybe this was a home made weight for a particular purpose. It weighs considerably more than a gram or grain and may be for a specialist use. It is 17.6mm in diameter, 2.1mm thick and weighs 4.49 grams. Lead tokens ha…
