Silver coin. The flan of a hammered coin worn entirely smooth on both sides. Paired parallel lines might hint at this having been folded as a keepsake and subsequently flattened, the former being an oft-reported adaptation of the sixpence of William III (1693-1702). However, the flan is a little small for this identification to be sustained. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Diameter: 18.6mm, Weight: 1.40gms

Copper alloy coin weight. The weight is square, flat and decorated. The weight is for either an excelente (c.3.5g) or double excelente (c.7g) of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, the coin type introduced in 1497 (excelentes were usually known as ducats, since they shared their standards). The weight is probably English, as it resembles a version in the Withers' little pamphlet Lions, Ships and Angels (p.30), but they don't include it in the big British Coin Weights book. These weights can be as much as 100 years later than the original coin, but it is probably 16th century.

A post medieval copper alloy coin from India. Shailendra Bhandare of the Ashmolean Museum writes: 'The coin is a Paisa of Gwalior State, Gwalior Fort mint, struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Akbar II, during the reign of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia (1796-1825). Details of date etc are not seen due to the poor condition of the coin.' The coin has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 5.5mm thick. It weighs 8.6g. It is fairly common to find Indian coins in Britain, probably because they were brought here by people serving in the Empire in India.
