A Post-medieval copper alloy coin weight, dating to AD 1604-1619. The weight is circular in plan and flat in cross section, and is stamped bifacially. One face depicts a double arched crown surmounting XI over S. The other depicts a right facing bust with the insciption: [I R M] BRITAN. Both are within a pelleted border. Dimensions: diameter 16.5mm; thickness 2.5mm; weight 3.85g. Such coin weights correspond to the double crown of James I's second coinage, comparable examples can be seen recorded on this database, for example LEIC-B5F893.

Obverse: Saint Michael angel with halo spearing a dragon within a beaded border within a plain border. Complete copper alloy Post-Medieval coin weight. The weight is roughly square in shape. The upper face has the raised figures 'X.V.s' below a crown and the reverse face has a circular groove around the outer edge with a raised sun symbol surrounded by lions and fleur de lis in the centre. A shiny green patina remains in some places, but the surface is fairly erroded and pitted. Weights bearing the sun symbol are for the spur ryal (or rose noble) of James I (Withers 1995, p.38). A copper alloy square coin weight of James I, equal to a unite (20 shillings). Obverse: laurelled(?) bust, facing left, within a circular pellet border. Reverse: crown at top, XX in centre, S at bottom, all within a circular pellet border. This is a coin weigh for a unite, which was worth 1 pound of gold. First produced in 1604, this initially had a value of 20 shillings (until 1612 when the price of gold rose, making it equal to 22 shillings). Each face is 18mm square.
