Cast zinc alloy replica or copy of a medallion or perhaps a fragment of a medallion, with the busts of William and Mary (1688-1694) facing each other on the obverse and a coat of arms, similar to that used on their guineas and half guineas, on the reverse. The busts are each within a beaded oval which are linked together by an attachment which may mimic a clasp or hinge so that the impression is meant to look like an open locket. The replica has been made up to two halves which have been glued together, and this tacky material still survives around the edge of the object. The coat o…

On the reverse is the inscription GERHARD/ BERSU/ ZUM 65 GEBURSTAG/ VON SEINEN/ FREUDEN. The medal was presented to Gerhard Bersu, the eminent German archaeologist, on his 65 birthday. Bersu (1889 - 1964) came to England in 1935, having been sacked by the Nazis. While in England he carried out important excavations, in particular, the Iron Age settlement at Little Woodbury. When the war came and he and his wife were interned on th…

A lead alloy medallion or pendant which is probably modern, perhaps dating from the Victorian period. It has a diameter of 39.7mm and is 3.5mm thick. The medallion is gilded and decorated on both faces but the poor quality of the alloy means that much of the detail is illegible. The obverse bears a large central cross potent with five pellets in each angle. There is also a legend round the edge which is illegible. The reverse shows a coat of arms with a crown above and emblems to the side. This is believed to be the royal arms of Portugal. It is likely that this medallion is based upo…

A cast copper alloy (brass) medallion featuring Christian iconography. It consists of an oval decorated field, suspended by subtriangular loop, now broken, presumably for attachment to a chain or similar. The oval field is decorated on both faces, and features a single marginal line around the designs. The obverse features a male figure in the arms of a female, with a cross in the background; this clearly depicts Christ and the Virgin following the crucifixion (the Pieta, 13th Station of the Cross). The surrounding inscription is unclear. The reverse has a right-facing bearded, m…
