A cast, copper alloy coin weight of Continental manufacture, dating from 1611-1644AD. It is double sided, one side carrying the device of a raised right hand and the initials G D, indicating that it originates from Antwerp and the workshop of G. Van Dunwalt, which is known to have operated between these dates (see Withers, Lions, Ships and Angels, page 60). The other side is largely illegible. It is 15.8mm square and weighs 6.68gm. This find was recorded from an export licence.

A cast, copper alloy, coin weight of early post-medieval date, probably dating from 1530-1600AD. It is square and double sided. One side carries the device of a crowned rose and the other that of a hand within a wreath. These markings suggest that it was of Continental manufacture, the hand being the mark for Antwerp in the Low Countries, and that it was used to weigh the gold crowns issued during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I between 1526 and 1548. It is 15.21mm square and weighs 3.35g. Note: This find was recorded from an export licence. Similar examples are illustrated i…

A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for a 10 shilling coin of Charles I - either a gold angel or double crown. Many such weights are countermarked with a crowned 'I', a hangover from the reign of James I (Withers and Withers 1995, 67). On this example the stamp is in the top righthand corner of the reverse face; this is the case with another 10 shilling coin weight recorded on this database (HESH-5AB641), while a different example was struck in the top lefthand corner (SUR-45BBA8). Of the three, only this current example bears an inc…

A copper-alloy coin weight for a Scottish Fourpence. Biggs (1995, p. 21) gives a date range of 1650-1800, suggesting that c. 1700 AD is most likely. The object consists of a circular disc which is stamped on both sides with 'D/IIII' above the stamped mark of a lion, standing left, rampant. The weight measures 20.2mm in diameter, 2.3mm thick and weighs 5.89g.

A cast copper alloy ecu of France coin weight of probable post-medieval date. The flat square double-sided coin weight measures 14.5mm by 13.4mm by 2.2mm and weighs 2.3g. The obverse shows a crown above a shield containing three lis, with a crowned lis either side. The reverse has the numerals II in a rectangle. The ideal weight was 3.5g, but in practice the weights and the circulating coins were around 3.2g (Paul Withers, pers. comm.) so this weight is very light due to pre- and post-depositional wear.

A post medieval copper alloy bullion weight which is square in plan. It is 16.2mm square and 4.1mm thick. It is marked with 5 stamped annulets and a rampant lion mark, and the design is repeated on the reverse. It is intended to be a 5 pennyweight measure (equal to the weight of five pennies), though at 7.36g, it is slightly light. There are many varieties of the lion countermark. The weight dates from 1600 – 1850 AD. For reference see “Bullion Weights” by Norman Biggs (1995), page 19 and 20.
