Cast copper alloy coin weight with the letters L . S above the numbers 3 . 12 on both the obverse and reverse of the weight. These numbers equate to the value of £3 and 12 shillings and would have been the largest weight in a set of up to eleven weights used from c.1760-1773 to weigh the Portuguese moidore and 'joe' series of gold coins. This one was particularly used for the double johannes which equated to 8 escudos. Weights like this one, stamped with incuse letters and ciphers, were made by watch-makers, jewellers and other traders who bought blanks from wholesalers and stamped th…

A flat and square copper alloy coin weight, known as a ‘square brass’. The coin weight is unifaced. The coin weights obverse surface depicts a ship with a letter H in the left hand field, at the side of the mast. The H is for Henricus. i.e. Henry. The reverse appears to be blank. This type of coin weight usually dates from the 16th - 17th centuries from Germany or the Low Counties. Those without a reverse (like this one) are generally German. The weight is in good condition, with a slightly pitted, dark brownish-red surface.

Pan weight of Anne, 1702-14. It is copper alloy (probably brass) and 14mm in diameter, 3mm thick and weighing 2.94g (45.3 grains and 0.104oz). It is uniface and slightly chipped. This is probably a weight for one eighth oz (0.125oz) which has lost some fabric through wear and damage.

Two square copper alloy coin weights. All faces are very worn and no decoration can be seen. Both measure 13mm by 13mm and 2.5mm thick, however their weights are 3.35g and 4.03g. 4.03mm is probably the correct corroded weight for an Angel coin weight.

Cast copper alloy coin weight for a Charles I 10 shilling coin, probably a Half Laurel or Angel. The distinction between the two is difficult due to the weight of the coin weight and the wear on the obverse face. The coin weight is an irregular square shape in plan and rectangular in section, with a slightly bowed profile. The edges of the weight are bevelled. The coin weight measures 14.1mm in length, 14.4mm in width, is 3.2mm thick, and weighs 4.31 grams (0.153 ozs or 66.6 grains). The coin weight is stamped with two motifs; an obverse and reverse. The device on the obverse is …
