A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is a 'sport', that is, it does not relate to a coin as such, rather it is the product of a moneyer playing with dies in their spare time. The flan would appear to be genuine, but relate to a different coin to the dies used - those for an angel of James I. On one face the die for striking St Michael has been struck twice so that the two angels join in a mirror image. On the other face the crown has been struck twice so that the crowns are opposing. This was done by rotating the flan through 180° and st…

A double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for a 10 shilling coin of Charles I - either a gold angel or double crown. Many such weights are countermarked with a crowned 'I', a hangover from the reign of James I (Withers and Withers 1995, 67). On this example the stamp is in the top righthand corner of the reverse face; this is the case with another 10 shilling coin weight recorded on this database (HESH-5AB641), while a different example was struck in the top lefthand corner (SUR-45BBA8). Of the three, only this current example bears an inc…

A worn copper-alloy coin weight of post-medieval date. It is square and decorated unifacially. In low relief on the upper face is a seated monarch within a beaded border. Withers & Withers (1995, 25) note that this device was used on weights produced in the Low Countries for certain coins of Henry VIII. The dimensions of this coin would be consistent with a coin weight for a half sovereign, albeit the weight is slightly light. Paul Withers (pers. comm. 26 January 2007) suggests that the weight was made in 'the north Netherlands roughly contemporaeneously with the coin'. Half sovereig…

A very worn copper-alloy object: probably a coin weight. It is roughly square in shape with each edge bevelled irregularly giving it a sub-trapezoidal cross-section. It is seemingly decorated unifacially; the device is to worn to discern. The metal is a dull red-brown colour with traces of green corrosion product on the lower face particularly. This probable coin weight probably dates from the early post-medieval period.

Copper alloy square coin weight of Post-Medieval date. The weight has transverse file marks on the edges. The upper surface is slightly concave, possibly from manufacture. On the upper surface there is a raised design of a crowned bust facing right set within a dotted border, which is slightly off centre. The letters IR/BRI are either side of the bust. On the lower surface the raised design is again set within a dotted border, slightly off centre. There is a crown surmounting XI S (11s), which is the value of the relevant coin. In the top left hand corner there is a stamped lette…
