A complete silver coin of Post-Medieval date (AD 1558-1649). The coin is heavily worn and struck coin with the letters R B stamped onto one side. Probably a Sixpence or Groat. Any detail on the coin has been worn off or deliberately removed, meaning it is hard to identify with any degree of certainty. It is likely, based on its size, to be either a groat from the reign of Elizabeth I to Charles I. The coin also has two bends, in opposing directions, similar to ‘love tokens’ of this period.   Diameter: 21.52mm, Thickness: 0.64mm, Weight: 2.0g Similar e…

Irregular, thin corroded copper alloy token. 17th century. Obv: Illegible Rev: Cross hatch/portcullis inside a central circle. Legend illegible. Slightly bent around the edges. Tokens of this kind are used commonly in the 17th century by local shops and taverns in place of regular currency, which was in shortage and mistrusted at this time. The tokens were used in exchange for goods at one particular shop or trusted shops within one neighbourhood. The tokens are therefore rarely found far away from the area in which they were produced and used.

Treasure report from Dr Barrie J. Cook: I have examined two coins found at Newton Bromswold, Northamptonshire. Both are English gold coins of the denomination of half-sovereign (= 10 shillings or half a pound). Both were also issued in the reign of King Edward VI (1547-53), despite the fact that the name and image on one of the coins is of his father Henry VIII. When Edward acceeded, his government had to consider how to deal with the debased coinage introduced by Henry in 1544 and, for a while, carried on in the style of the late king. The details of the coins are as follows: 1. …

I have examined two coins reported found at Gayton, Northamptonshire. Both are silver pennies of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland), and will thus have a fineness of the official sterling silver standard, 92.5% fine metal. Their details are as follows. James I, Second Coinage (1605-19) 1. Penny (fragmentary), initial mark rose (1605-6), wt: 0.37, North 2106/1 2. Penny (2 fragments), no initial mark, combined wt: 0.59g, North 2106/1 The two coins are of good silver and would certainly have been in circulation together, so the question is whether they are likel…

A late 18th or 19th-century copper-alloy gaming piece or token, modelled after a coin of George III. The fact that this coin bears the reverse inscription 'remembering the good old days', suggests that it dates to a period later than the reign of George III (1760-1820), who is depicted on the obverse. The token weighs 1.83g, and measures 21mm in diameter.
