This Edward I silver penny has a crowned bust and flattened, Maltese style, initial cross (Cross Pattee). The Initial cross conforms with North’s Class x a-e type (North 1960,19, figure 18). The drapery is drawn in the style defined by North as Class IIIa (North1960, 19 figure 21). The side fleur on the crown conforms with the early class III (North 1960, 20 figure 28). The reverse inscription reads [CIVITAS LINCOL] indicating the coin was minted in Lincoln. This mint identification is restricted to Class III (c,d,f,g) (North 1960, 20). Flat, sub-octagonal copper-alloy counter with raised border on both sides. One side is stamped with T. BROWN DERBY and the other with BROWN. There is lettering stamped on the border on one side: 'A' and 'A' are on the corners of the left side and '1' in the centre of the right side. The word BROWN on the reverse is unevenly stamped, with larger letters at the end of the word.
