A complete cast copper-alloy circular uniface coin weight for an Angel (c. 1604-c. 1619). The weight depicts St Michael with angel wings spearing a dragon at his feet. It is of a British type produced between 1464 and 1619. The weight at 68.2 grains (4.41g. is low for an Angel (80 grains, reduced to 71 grains in 1604) but too high for a half Angel (40 grains reduced to 35.5 grains). Weights were usually made for the minimum legal weight of the coin rather than the average and also lose some weight through corrosion over the course of time. A complete cast copper alloy coin weight for a Thistle Crown of post-Medieval date (1601-1620). The coin weight is square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section and has slightly bevelled edges. One side of the coin weight depicts a crown with IIIIS below it and 4D 1/2 below that. All these elements are contained within a circle formed from sub-oval pellets. However, most of the pellets are off the flan. The other side has a crowned thistle. The thistle divides the initials I R in the field. A complete cast copper alloy double-faced coin weight for a quarter laurel of James I, Third Coinage (1619-1625). Obverse: crowned ‘V’ with a small ‘s’ at the right side within a beaded circle (the mark of value = 5 shillings). Countermarked with a letter ‘I’ to the right of the crown. Reverse: laureate bust left within a beaded circle. The edges are bevelled and two opposite edges have been filed. The weight is of uneven thickness. A complete cast copper alloy coin weight of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1760-1773). Diameter: 23.2mm and 4.1mm thick. Weight: 13.67g. This double-sided coin weight has a similar design on both sides: S/36, representing 36 shillings. Around 1760 to 1773 many British maker’s made sets of weights to weigh the Portuguese moidore and ‘joe’ series of gold coins; the guinea, half and quarter guinea. These sets consisted of up to eleven weights (Withers and Withers 1995, 52-53).

The difference in weight can probably be accounted for by the loss of metal due to wear and cleaning. Each edge has been subjected to heavy filing.

The weight indicated by Withers for this type of coin weight is 196.5gr. However, due to the loss of some of the material due to corrosion the weight of this Isle of Wight find is 169.5gr (10.99g).
