A complete silver half-tostao of Philip III (1621-40) = Philip IV of Spain as King of Portugal.
It has been countermarked to a new valuation of 60 reis under Joao (John) IV (1640-56) following restoration of Portugal's independence. Under the Regulation and Law of February 1 and 3, 1641, half-tostaos were among the species revalued, at 60 reis. The weight is also correct for this denomination. Because it's both worn and somewhat double-struck, it is difficult to read the legends, the only obvious elements being the non-specific 'REX' on the obverse and '[IN H]OC [SIGNO V]INCE[S]' on…

A complete cast copper alloy coin weight for a Thistle Crown of post-Medieval date (1601-1620).
The coin weight is square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section and has slightly bevelled edges.
One side of the coin weight depicts a crown with IIIIS below it and 4D 1/2 below that. All these elements are contained within a circle formed from sub-oval pellets. However, most of the pellets are off the flan. The other side has a crowned thistle. The thistle divides the initials I R in the field.

A complete cast copper alloy double-faced coin weight for a quarter laurel of James I, Third Coinage (1619-1625).
Obverse: crowned ‘V’ with a small ‘s’ at the right side within a beaded circle (the mark of value = 5 shillings). Countermarked with a letter ‘I’ to the right of the crown.
Reverse: laureate bust left within a beaded circle.
The edges are bevelled and two opposite edges have been filed. The weight is of uneven thickness. At one corner the maximum thickness is 2.1mm and the opposite corner has a thickness of 1.3mm.
