County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. An apparently hollow object of sheet metal, bearing an odd resemblance to what is taken to be a solid cast Viking strap end fragment reported from the same general location (NLM-E77782). This object has a pair of terminal spheres, next to a gentle expansion introducing a curve to either longer edge. Between these edges, a prominent border and two wavy ribs appear, with an oval form between each rib and the outer edges. The underside is apparently plain. The object is distorted by light crushing, to which its hollow form makes it particularly …

Copper alloy possible strap end fragment. Cast sub-rectangular plate with wavy edges and with a pair of rounded projections at one end, bearing bilateral decoration. On one side this comprises two strongly-defined curvilinear ribs and matching borders; the object has apparently broken across a point of weakness introduced by this decoration. Subsidiary curved features appear between the ribs, a detail noted only when magnified views of the object were considered. The other side bears a single worn rib comparable to those described above and traces of more finely-incised decoration of …

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. An oval plate fragment with moulded decoration on one flat side, limited by a border along one edge. The decoration comprises thin curled vegetal scrolls. One end is turned over and the object is bent to a wavy profile. Abraded. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a strap end, but there is no evidence for attachment. The borderline along one side only also points to this being a fragment rather than a complete or near-complete object. The style of decoration might appear at various times between the Middle Saxon and the later post…

A billeted border encloses a series of separate curvilinear features whose effect resembles that of a running guilloche though its components are actually unlinked. Traces of gilding are trapped in the decorative mouldings, suggesting an 8th-century date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, …
