Lead alloy probable badge. Cast uniface disc bearing moulded motif deriving from a cross potent with a pellet at its centre, though with reversed or arrow-shaped ends to its horizontal arms and with a crescent in each of its angles, and with a pair of supporting struts to support what is taken to be its lower part. A broad bordering band bears markings resembling a legend of letters though this reporter is uncertain as to whether they are. A possible reading might include: IXIIII/DEVM/[--/--]. Copper alloy badge. Pressed metal military uniform cap badge of two orders: the inner a small rose with a long folded rectangular tab brazed to its upper rim; and the outer a coiled bugle or hunting horn. The latter denotes a Light Infantry or Rifle Regiment while the rose probably points to a Yorkshire or Lancashire recruiting catchment for the unit. Copper alloy badge fragment. A small plate in the form of a Maltese cross with angular concave ends to its arms. A central roundel includes two crossed swords, possibly with a letter in each interval between the swords. On the back, an integrally cast lentoid-section lug has a flat, probably made, end. This was presumably inserted in a separate back plate [now lost], probably to retain a lapel badge in a buttonhole. The cross is vaguely reminiscent of that form chosen for the Victoria Cross, a medal made from captured Russian guns and introduced in the Crimean War (1853-1856). Suggeste…

Silver badge. Stamped metal plate depicting a straight-sided heraldic shield within a band where cables support a plaque for a basal legend reading M/S  A/S [standing for Mine Sweeping/ Anti-Submarine], surmounted by a crown with jewelled band and castellated projections made up of the mainsails and aft view of an early 19th-century warship; a historic First Rate like Victory is intended. The shield is charged with a reticulate pattern – in this case apt as it represents a steel net - in which two mines and a trapped shark speared by a marlin spike appear. Notation: RD 83775…

Copper alloy badge. A pressed sheet metal badge in the form of a heraldic shield with engrailed top edge, charged with a broad bend and a central object resembling a pumpkin. The function is indicated by  two coils of a light spring brazed to the back on one side; the corresponding catch is lost. Possibly an item issued by a school or club or specialist interest group - the motif might suggest a gardening society if it is read aright. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950. An incomplete late medieval to early post-medieval copper-alloy button-badge, dating to AD 1491 - c. 1525. The object would have been circular, but now has fragments of the outer edge missing; the attachment loop is also missing. The front of the badge is decorated with an engraved design of two shields attached to a tree - the shield on the left bears the Arms of France, the shield on the right the Arms of Brittany. The outer edge is decorated with a pellet border flanked by a moulded line. The reverse is undecorated; in the centre remains …

A Medieval lead alloy incomplete secular badge dating to the early 15th century. The badge depicts a cresset or fire beacon which was an emblem favoured by King Henry V who reigned from AD 1413-1422. The fire beacon (cresset) is depicted with flames above two bands of pellets. The lower band has rings around each small pellet. The lower part of the fire beacon is decorated with flowing ridges which taper to the base. No stand is preserved, but the long, integral pin (bent) on the reverse suggests that a stand was originally present. This badge is very similar to no.700 in Mitchi…

Late Post Medieval to early Modern copper alloy regimental head dress badge for St. Edwards School, Oxford O.T.C (Officer Training Corps). It is a seven pointed star surmounted by a coronet, possibly a Saxon crown, in plan. The pressed decoration on the star is now largely illegible, but originally showed an escutcheon bearing the arms of the school (Kipling and King, Head-Dress Badges of the British Army: volume 1, 1978, # 2671). The rear mounted attachment clip appears intact though corroded. Dates to between c1908 and c1940 AD. The length is 36mm, width 33mm, thickness 6mm, an…

Lead alloy badge fragment. The central part of a plano-convex cast badge in the form of a star or sun with eight wavy tapered rays oriented as a left hand spiral, of which five are broken; abraded and lightly patinated. The ambiguity of the badge is significant, as it was adopted as the sunburst by the Yorkist Earl of March, latterly King Edward IV (1461-1470 and 1471-1483) following his victory at Mortimer's Cross (1461), while a star with streams was the badge of the resolutely Lancastrian Earl of Oxford. The two motifs were lethally confused in dense fog at the Battle of Barnet (14…

Copper alloy badge fragment. The central part of a pressed metal uniform badge of the National Fire Brigade. Relicts of a rayed outer star project from one side, with a circumferential label within, reading: NATIONAL . FIRE . BRIGA[DE]. This encloses a central motif of a Union flag on staff within a laurel wreath. Now frayed and crumpled at its edges, outer order mostly lost. The National Fire Brigade was established in the later 19th century, at some time before 1887. The style of the badge is similar to that of military badges current c.1900.
