An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy and iron precision instrument - pair of dividers dating 16th - 17th century. These dividers comprise two hinged arms; the upper section is copper alloy while the lower arms are iron; the lower arms are broken and missing, except for a small iron stub projecting from one of the arms. These iron terminals would fit into slots in the lower edge of the copper alloy arms. The copper alloy hinge section has a circular terminal. Lead Mount. Cast flat-backed oval plate with a possibly floral design comprising nine pellets around a central aperture of diameter 2.7mm; the latter presumably served for attachment. A further dimple of 2mm diameter lies towards the edge of the plate, but although present on both front and back, this does not appear to carry through the object. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 23.3mm, Width: 16.9mm, Thickness: 5.1mm, Weight: 9.49gms.

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy button of post-medieval date, dating from between 1600 and 1800 AD. The button is circular and plano-convex, and is missing its attachment loop. The front of the buckle is decorated with enamel. Much of the enamel is missing, but the design appears to have been floral, and there were probably originally eight white petals surounded by an enamelled blue background. A circle in the centre of the button was also probably enamelled, although no enamel survives here. However, a similar example recorded on this database (WMID-56C362) has a blue circle, and th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy Medieval horse harness pendant dating from the 13th-15th century. The pendant is thin and long and appears to depict a floral design on a stem. The flower head appears to contains blue enamel. There are two large copper alloy rivets, one of which remains. The size of the rivet above the hinge (9.5mm long) suggests that this pendant was attached to a leather strap, such as a horse harness.

A complete set of copper alloy cufflinks. Post-Medieval to Modern in date. Two oval discs with a slightly convex reverse and integrally cast suspension loop in the centre. The suspension loops are connected by an elongated oval link. On one side the link is corroded onto the oval disc, the opposite is still movable but shows signs of wear through useage, suggesting extensive use. One one of the discs there is a suggestion of a design etched into the disc as decoration. Several radiating lines suggest that this may have been a wheatshef, although corrosion obscured much of…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy Post-medieval finger ring. The ring is large with an oval bevel. The sides of the bevel is decorated with a moulded floral pattern. The bezel itself is flat and very worn, and although no initials or image can be seen, it is likely that the initials or mark of a merchant adorned the bevel top. The bevel top measures 15.94mm long and 11.98mm wide. There is no trace of gildering or silvering, although this may have been worn completely away. This is a signet type ring, or merchant's ring, and it probably dates from the late 16th century, through to the late 18th.

Lead or lead alloy pommel. A cast pommel with two short moulded arms. An oak leaf motif appears on front and back, rising above the arms. A rectangular impression in the lower end of the pommel measures 7.7mm by 4.7mm, where the tang of a blade was lodged; a similar rebate, partly burred over, lies adjacent, so pommel and hilt were presumably adjusted at some time. Though lead is apt to function as a counterweight, finishing is crude with prominent mould lines. The weapon whence this derives may have been of low or 'ammunition' quality. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650.
