Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap end from the Early Medieval period. The strap end shows a zoomorphic decoration in a panel, although the object is corroded and this is difficult to distinguish. The terminal is also zoomorphic with a squared snout. At the broken end of the object a curved, incised line is visible, probably the bottom of a trilobate design. The object shows similarities to a strap end from South Newbald; figure 6.3.5 in the Leahy's 'Middle Anglo-Saxon Metalwork from South Newbald' in Geake and Kenny (2000).

The mount then narrows to an incurved waist (W.: 22.1mm) below which are a further pair of knobs above the straight base. Above it are two circular perforations; these rivet holes are unaligned. The third rivet hole can be found at the apex loop, off centre. All three rivets are now missing. On the lower face the sub-rectangular, p…

Copper alloy Anglo-Saxon strap end, probably of 9th Century date. Incomplete and damaged, so unable to interpret decorative scheme (which could be an angular zoomorphic design, or a pattern). The design is outlined, probably with enamel, some of which survives as a white border around parts of the design. The terminal appears to be in the form of an animal head, but is poor and corroded/damaged. (Ref K Leahy in 'Early Deira' Geake & Kenny Eds. Oxbow, 2000 p57-60).

The terminal has a well formed and deeply cut animal head motif, with 'ears' and eyes clearly visible, but the tip is now missing. The strap-end was originally secured by two rivets, with two piercings at the…
