This is a small lead figurine of a cockerel standing 36mm high, cast in the round from a two-piece mould. Its tail is typically displayed, and from its lower hind quarters there proceeds a hollow tube of lead which is circular or ovate in section. The cockerel's feet stand on a rounded base, part of which is broken away to reveal that the whole casting is hollow, and was perhaps once stoppered below the base. The pipe or tube described above is half-round hollow (in the upper half) but filled with lead in the lower or under part of the tube. The cockerel's body surface is covered with …

An incomplete but well preserved lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The whistle is cast in the form of a dog's head with a wide collar displaying the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog is biting on an iron pin, which presumably would have formed a suspension ring. The dog's face is well rendered however its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed although some type of hunting hound seem likely. There is traces of gilding around one eye socket. The front of the whistle has an open tube with curved lip with a (now loose) insert to direct the air th…

An incomplete lead-tin or pewter alloy hunting whistle dating to the 18th - 19th century. The terminal of the whistle is in the form of an animal, probably a fox's head. The fox has a long oval snout beneath which is a linear mouth. Either side of the snout are lentoid eyes above which are pronounced and ridged eyebrows. The ears are small and rounded and one has been slightly flattened. The fur of the neck is represented with undulating moulded ridges. At the back of the neck is a circumferential collar and the object straightens with the curved perforation of the sound hole at the t…

At a right angle to the body of the whistle is an incomplete handle which measures 12.68mm in length. At the top of the object the sound hole is C-shaped in plan. An incomplete lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The front of the whistle is hollow cast in the form of a dog's head, which is the only surviving element. The whistle section would have been integrally cast but is now missing due to an old break. Some examples of this type of whistle have a wide collar and the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog's face is well rendered but its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed; some type of hunting hound seem likely. Although these are usually described as hawking whistles, I suspect that they could have b…

A cast lead zoomorphic weight of the Medieval period, c. 1200-1500. Lead possible standing weight, painted. Cast model of a swan on a large oval base which is as long as the bird itself; crudely modelled. The paint traces suggest an overall coat of black paint covering both bird and base, which would lack aesthetic appeal but which might be practical if, for example, the object saw kitchen use. Patinated overall. The mass, which was imprecisely measured on postal scales, could suggest this to represent one half of an averdepois pound. The object might alternatively be a paperweight, though the odd colour and poor modelling argue against such an essent…

An incomplete lead-alloy trade weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1380 - 1600). The weight is shield shaped with a moulded design on the face. The reverse is flat and undecorated with a deep, rounded hole off-centre. The design on the face appears to be a crude depiction of a bird in flight. Medieval, about AD 1400 - 1800. Description: The weight is a shallow dome with a convex upper side and a roughly flat base. The upper domed surface is in the form of a male lion with clearly defined muzzle, nose eyes and a main picked out with downward diagonal lines. It is patinated an off white typical of aged lead. Measurements: 24.88mm in diameter, 10.23mm thick and 30.3g in weight. Discussion: Although probably a relatively late, if a weight, as seen by relatively standard 30g weight an earlier date cannot be discounted. Nor can we be certain this is a weight and not a m…

Lead weight. Cast plano-convex oval weight, with moulded detail on its convex side depicting a human mask with vertically ribbed hair, deep oval eye sockets; a perfunctory slot suggesting the base of the nose and the mouth; above a rounded beard or chin rendered by a few vertically incised strokes. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of a Roman uncia [of 27.3gms], and that it was used to measure small quantities of commodities of either high monetary or – perhaps - culinary value. The appearance is of a Celtic head, the distinctively ribbed hairstyle appearing mos…

This artefact was originally identified at a 16th - 17th Century dress fastener. Therefore the artefact was reported as a possible Treasure item and was sent to the British Museum. The British Museum's Post-Medieval artefact specialist (Dora Thornton) has suggested that the artefact is more likely to be a watch key than a dress-hook. The watch key is silver, with traces of what could be niello. The artefact is triangular in shape tapering to a point which appears to be the zoomorphic head of a bird. The opposite end of the triangle has been broken; the breaks do not look recent. The w…

Copper alloy vessel leg (as identified by finder). A cast and possibly anthropomorphic leg from a vessel, perhaps from a tripod ewer serving as formal tableware rather than a cooking pot. The sharply everted foot appears like a shoe or possibly the end of an armoured leg, and is separated from the leg by a horizontal rib in relief. The leg itself is of irregular hexagonal section, and unusually long and slender. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350.
