Copper alloy mount. Cast discoid plate with a central hemispherical concavo-convex or hollow boss and a broad flat rim. The rim bears features in three concentric orders. The outermost is a juxtaposed series of flat circular stamps which overlie a continuous moulded pattern made up of five fine concentric strands. The median order comprises juxtaposed stamped rectangular panels. The innermost order is made of triple finely moulded circumferential lines divided into small [length 1.5mm] segments by grooves. This decoration retains extensive white metal plating, which extends onto the l…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex or biconical whorl a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm, with moulded decoration on both sides comprising a five-pointed star with a single pellet in each of its triangular points and a single pellet in each triangular field between the points. A prominent rim separates the two halves of the whorl. Patinated overall. In good condition, and with unusually tidy and coherent decoration for this object class. The mass may suggest a primary use for plying cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Identical moulded relief decoration on the two sides comprises triangular groups of three pellets in six compartments defined by radial lines which extend to a circumferential rim. This is markedly neater than the majority of whorls of this type, which are more angular in profile and more haphazard in their decoration, albeit respecting the same conventions. The finder kindly notes PAS parallel DUR-736244. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Copper alloy purse bar fragment, as kindly suggested by Rob Webley, correcting an earlier identification by this reporter. Rob suggests: 'I think this is the arm from a broken purse bar of Ward-Perkins's Class A'.A solid cast oval section rod, tapers to a blunt point with a knop or nipple at one end andis broken immediately adjacent to a low relief collar at the other. Between point and collar, moulded paired lines in low relief intersect to produce open cross-hatch decoration of the stem, limited by similar paired circumferential lines at either end of the decorated zone. Now bent. S…

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet cloisonné panel, perhaps from a larger composite object. The panel is trapezoidal, and has a foundation of a thin gold backplate with thin vertical strips, probably soldered on, forming the walls. The ends of the strip overlap in the centre of the narrower end, and here are bent a little over the cloisonné panels, which may have helped to hold the entire object together; in other places the side strips have sprung away from the cloisonné panels. The backplate is a little longer at the narrower end and is bent up, partly covering the ov…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.5mm. A decorative relief design of radiating lines appears on both sides, with a possibly solitary pellet on one side, and with a thickened rim between the sides. Patinated overall and gouged. This whorl was probably used to ply a cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 9.6mm. A decorative design of triangles and pellets appears on both sides, with a heavily moulded rim separating them. On one side the pellets, which are invariably fewer than the triangles, are enclosed within them; on the other side, pellets mostly interrupt triangles. Judging from its mass, this whorl would probably be used to ply cord. Both sides have been deeply gouged, most such damage being recent. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Traces of a decorative pattern of triangles defined by ribs in relief appears at one point on the edge. Patinated overall. Though the plano-convex form is usually considered of early medieval date, the decorative scheme tends to relate this to the post-medieval series of whorls decorated by triangle and pellet motifs. The mass may suggest this whorl was used to ply cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead
Spindle Whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm. A decorative design of lines forming triangles with single and paired pellets appears on both sides. A circumferential rim occurs where the halves of the whorl meet. There is also a circumferential rim around the aperture. The execution of the decoration is atypically fine. The mass of the whorl suggests it would be used to ply cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.6mm. Both sides are decorated with lines and pellets moulded in relief, with a prominent rim where the two sides meet. The execution of this decoration and its preservation are both atypically fine. Patinated overall. This whorl would be most suitable for plying cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead alloy ampulla. Hollow cast ampulla with small handles folded back against the bag-like body of a vessel; the top is probably crimped shut and the object complete. One side bears a compass drawn moulded design of a four petalled flower. The other side bears the motif of a cushion crown or coronet towards the base, with the straight bars of monogram lettering above, possibly an M or W. The crown probably alludes to Mary as Queen of Heaven, and tends to associate this object with devotion to the Marian shrine at Walsingham, a cult which flourished in the later Middle Ages. Copper alloy with enamel umbonate brooch. A cast circular plate brooch with central shallow concavo-convex domed boss of diameter 18mm bearing two rows of triangular cells retaining enamel. A flat rim or gutter surrounds the boss, and three knops, of a probable original total of eight, project fron the outer rim; these each have a central circular cell surrounded by a low gutter, but it is uncertain whether features these had received and colorant. The housing for a hinged pin remains on the back together with the stub of the pin; the catch plate opposite is lost. The object is staine…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm. Decoration comprises radially arranged triangles in relief with a pellet between each on one side, and a less distinct and coherent arrangement of lines, some shaped as elongated commas, and pellets on the other. Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.3mm. A decorative scheme in relief comprises spidery alternating saltires and pellets on one side, and a more definite - if more haphazard - series of pellets and triangles on the other, divided by a circumferential rim.
