Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy Roman oval/disc brooch with extensive tinning on the raised borders of the front face. Hattatt calls this type 'central boss' but it is unclear whether there was a central boss, an enamel inlay, or nothing. Equally it is unclear whether the outer border panel was decorated, though it does seem likely that these 2 areas were decorated. Behind are the remains of the catchplate and a plate for the pin mechanism, which is missing. There is a substantial lip of tin from the front decoration around half the circumference of the rear face.
