A broken pair of copper-alloy tweezers of probable early-medieval date. They were made from a thin sheet bent double. Due to an old break the arms have separated with one retaining the turn for the loop (and little more beyond). This latter arm has been bent gradually along its length as a result of old damage. The other arm has received a more emphasised bend of around forty-five degrees towards the loop end. Both arms terminate in a flared terminal, both of which have suffered abrasions. Both arms are decorated on their outer surfaces around a third of the way from the terminal to t…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon small long brooch; 500-600 AD. The head is a cruciform around a central square head-plate, with double transverse incised lines between the central plate, the wings, top knop and bow. The square head-plate is 6.5mm wide. One wing and the top knop are complete, the other wing has half lost to an old break. All are integrally cast and half rounded in section with a flat back and convex front. The complete wing is 8.2mm long and the top knop 10.3mm; both have a broad transverse rib across the front about a third of the way along t…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded and abraded iron whittle-tang knife of early-medieval date. The knife appears to have lost its tip and suffered abrasions to its cutting edge and tang. The original form of the knife is difficult to assess, although it is comparable with an example illustrated in Hawkes and Grainger (2003, 110; ref. 91.3). The tang measures c. 21.8mm in length.

A slightly abraded fragment of dark grey earthenware of early-medieval date, Early or Middle Saxon; there has been a considerable amount of early-medieval material from the findspot. The sherd is broadly five-sided and is slightly curved in profile. It is decorated with three transverse grooves, above/below which is a motif formed using a sub-rectangular tool to impress (?wedge-shaped) marks in a circular arrangement (rosette). The motifs might suggest a cremation urn (cf. Hawkes and Grainger 2003, 131; e.g. ref. C. 34). An Early Saxon date is perhaps more likely for this sherd, altho…

A damaged and bent, now fragmentary, early-medieval (5th- to 6th-century Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy saucer brooch. The brooch would originally have been circular in plan with an upturned rim. Just over a third of the brooch survives, with the surviving section of the upturned rim very damaged and distorted. The upper surface of the brooch is divided into decorative zones: The inner zone is comprised of a raised concentric circle bordered by a narrow undecorated zone. The main decorative zone is comprised of Salin style I zoomorphic decoration which is extremely worn, and specific …

An incomplete early-medieval cast copper-alloy sword pommel of the 'cocked hat' type. The pommel is broadly rectangular in plan, with slightly bowed longer edges. The two shorter edges are both abraded and retain little of their flat semi-circular lugs. The rivets which would have gone through the lugs into the pommel bar naturally have been lost. The artefact is pyramidal in outline with concave sides and a small, flattened top. The lower surface of the pommel is deeply recessed. The upper surface has a smooth mid-green patina. The 'cocked hat' pommel is an early Anglo-Saxon type…

A twisted gilded copper-alloy artefact: probably a finger-ring of early-medieval date. The object is now sub-oval in plan. It is formed of ?three wires twisted together. It has corroded to a red-brown colour with traces of overlying gilding. The date is suggested by objects found in the vicinity. Further, a finger-ring can be found illustrated in Evison (1988, 101; ref. 41.3); this find may be directly related.

Middle Early Medieval copper alloy gilt pinhead with chip-carved decoration, measuring 16.9x22.2x1mm and weighing 1.90g.
It is roughly drop-shaped though not entirely symetrical and has a 2.5mm diameter piercing at the narrower end which appears to have been formed by two ends being brought together above the piercing - a line/ break runs from the top of the peircing to the edge, the metal on either side being two rounded ends.
The chip-carved decoration comprises a central dimaond shape with a horizontal line passing through, making one edge of a larger triangular shape, its top…

A pin cast in copper alloy of probable early-medieval date (mid-late Anglo-Saxon). The pin has a polyhedral head (9.0 x 8.55 x 7.55mm), formed from a cuboid with its corners cut off; the triangles and lozenges thus formed are not regular. The four lozengiform fields round the edges are decorated with three scored diagonal lines in two rows. This is unusual as many polyhedral pins feature ring-and-dot decoration (see e.g. Hinton 1996, 22; fig. 9).
Below the head the shaft is faceted, and of crudely octagonal cross-section. Each face is decorated with a row of punched circles. Belo…

The very worn and abraded cast copper-alloy head probably from an early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD); the other possibility would be an X-form brooch. The head is rectangular (tending towards square), now with rounded corners. Central on one of the longer edges are the vestiges of the bow beginning to travel upwards. There is a possible transverse groove/ridge above this. From the same edge, but on the reverse surface and just off centre, is the highly abraded semi-circular pin lug (max. th.: 9.5mm). This appears to have broken through at the perforat…

A complete cast copper-alloy pin of probable Middle Saxon (early-medieval) date given the form of the head and the presence of a collar below. The head is a neat biconical shape with the collar directly below. Below this the shaft tapers very gradually to a now blunted tip. Around half way along the shaft it bends off at a shallow angle. The artefact now has a light green colour over a red-brown metal

Two sherds of late Saxon (early-medieval) coarseware, which appear to have the same rough red-brown colour fabric, and share the characteristic of flint and chalk temper use. There is a slight suggestion of some worn away slip or glaze, but it is too faint to merit any more than an allusion.

A very abraded fragment of dark grey earthenware with abundant small flint and chalk of early-medieval date, Early or Middle Saxon; there has been a considerable amount of early-medieval material from the findspot. The abrasions are especially deep on the dark outer side, with two very deep and wide scratches (which form a V shape) standing out from a carpet of smaller ones. As the abrasions are equally spread over both inside and outside faces it is suggested they occurred naturally since deposition.

The foot from an early-medieval small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD). The foot is expanded, with five sides. It is asymmetrical, with the left side when the foot is lowermost longer and wider. Above the foot the leg is as narrow as 6mm before flaring to 24.25mm at the foot. At the other end the bow curves upwards before a break. On the lower side of the leg is a slightly abraded, perpendicular catchplate (14.9 x 5.25 x 2mm). Viewing the brooch in profile one can see that the foot is bent upwards compared to the leg, most so on its left side. The upper surface of the brooch is d…

A slightly bent, but complete copper-alloy medieval scabbard chape of 12th-century date. The artefact is of sheet construction, formed of a triangle with protrusions at each end of its long edge, folded over on itself to give a U-shaped profile. The triangular element thus formed is 22.75mm by 17.2mm; the third, longest side is slightly curved. The protrusions (L.: 24.4mm), rectangular in plan, terminate in a lozenge with small collar below. The terminals are perforated centrally and attached to each other by an extant rivet. On the curved edge of the triangular element the sheets …
