A cast copper-alloy ansate brooch of the 8th century. The brooch has sub-square terminals, and the entire brooch is decorated with a banded effect such that the bow and centre of each terminal consists of a central band, with an outer band to each side on each terminal and at the peak of the bow. This means the bow has a square element at its peak. The outer edges of the terminals are gently curved, adding further decorative enhancement. The underside of one terminal contains two lugs and the corroded remains of an iron pin. A simple projecting hook forms the catch on the undersi…

A broken pair of copper-alloy tweezers of probable early-medieval date. They were made from a thin sheet bent double. Due to an old break the arms have separated with one retaining the turn for the loop (and little more beyond). This latter arm has been bent gradually along its length as a result of old damage. The other arm has received a more emphasised bend of around forty-five degrees towards the loop end. Both arms terminate in a flared terminal, both of which have suffered abrasions. Both arms are decorated on their outer surfaces around a third of the way from the terminal to t…

A cast copper-alloy possible escutcheon of Early Medieval date. The object has been cast in a stylised male face or mask design, convex, with a suspension hook and open eyes. The reverse is undecorated, but there is a small circular perforation, also visible on the face that probably indicates a secondary attachment point, perhaps for a rivet. The suspension hook emerged from the top of the head, curling back on itself. It has two incised lines, creating three bands on the hook. The face has three major elements: a helmet; the eyes and nose; and a beard. The helmet is crescen…

A superb Anglo-Saxon copper alloy buckle, Southern type of Marzinzic's Type 1.6a. Set with two garnets and having a narrowed pin bar, the pin is thick with a hooked end - the buckle may have had iron loops as well as a copper loop to attach it to the pin bar as the limited iron concretion indicates. The buckle is decorated within the recessed frame with cojoining circles down either side and a thick line with thinner lines coming off it to either side of the pin bar. This buckle dates from the late 6th to early 7th century and measures 28.47mm long, 20.29mm wide and is 4.05mm thick.…
