Copper alloy brooch with remains of iron pin. Cast lightly concavo-convex plate with twin stubs retaining a fragment of ferrous corrosion on the back marking the seat of a separate iron pin [otherwise lost], and with two small D-shaped lugs, one with a hole of diameter 1.2mm and therefore an attachment loop, set 12.5mm apart on the opposite side of the back. These pin-fittings and attachment loop are characteristic of a Scandiavian-style brooch.
The front bears a cross with expanded ends to its arms, straight upright members, with interlaced double strapwork in the angles and intrudin…

Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy openwork incomplete scabbard chape, of Early Medieval date, about AD 900 - 1000. The object is an almost flat piece of openwork metal, with two fairly complete edges and the other sides broken. The angle of the two unbroken sides suggests that the object could have been pentagonal or lozenge shaped. The front is decorated; it is moulded with an anthropomorphic head motif (probably originally central but now near the broken right hand edge), surrounded by apparently interlaced ribbon work forming an arc over the top of the head and filling the space to the sides. The dec…

Copper alloy artefact which is triangular in plan and domed in section, hollow at the rear. It is corroded and much of the original detail is lost, but the front has incised chip-carved, probably Borre style, decoration and was originally silvered, with some traces remaining in the recesses. There are old breaks at all three sides, and there are no signs of there having been any attachments within the concavity at the rear. It measures between 21.2 - 21.6mm across and stands 8.0mm high at the apex.

An incomplete middle to late early-medieval (c.800-1100) openwork copper alloy 'shield'-shaped sword scabbard chape, missing most of one face. It has been cast apparently in one piece; the breaks are old.
The object is U-shaped and a pointed-oval in cross-section. The sides of the U join with a flat cross-bar at the open end, and crossing transversely through this is a flat vertical bar running from the closed base to c.5mm beyond the cross-bar. Roughly half way along its length is a short horizontal bar, joining to the outside edges by way of a zig-zag angle (a short vertical drop a…

An incomplete late early-medieval (c.900-1100) copper alloy openwork unidentified object, probably Viking in style.
The object as-is is triangular in shape and hollow, measuring 20.3x6.7mm (16.6x3.9mm internally) at the wider open end (rectangular in cross-section) and narrowing to 13.3x8.5mm just before the terminal (a little thicker as the zoomorphic terminal extends into the base of the main body of the object; just above the zoomorphic decoration it measures 6.8mm in thickness). Beyond is a waisted area measuring 9.6x7.4mm and a rounded, open terminal beyond, trianglular in shape…

An incomplete Early Medieval Viking copper-alloy trefoil brooch, dating to AD 850 - 950. It is incomplete, missing the centre* and two arms. The surviving arm is d-shaped in plan with a rounded terminal and an irregular break at the proximal end. The front is decorated with chip-carved lines within a curved border, with traces of gilding remaining, and the reverse is tinned. There are two copper rivets spaced 8.5mm apart, 14mm in from the rounded end.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire

Lead weight. Cast flat-sided discoid weight with lightly bevelled edge, and with an off-centre dimple of depth 3mm, perhaps intended to assist its removal from a mould. The sides and base [as cast] are perhaps stippled with fine sand impressions; the upper surface is in contrast both flat and smooth. Patinated. Its mass does not appear among weights excavated from the medieval London waterfront. It might equate to eight Viking Age units of 4.43gms, as used under Norse rule and in the Viking 'kingdom' of York and Dublin. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950

An Early Medieval Arabic coin: a fragment of a silver dirham probably dating from about AD 750 - 950. Ruler and mint uncertain. Coins of this type are often found with other objects which suggest an Early Medieval trading site, so this fragment could be ancient loss. Dirhams can also be an indicator of a Viking Great Army camp site. The fragment is 15.1mm long, 14mm wide, 0.9mm thick and 0.81g.

White metal possible ingot fragment. A sub-triangular fragment of white metal, possibly beaten while on a flat surface with one curved edge and a juxtaposed flat surface, broken at its narrower end and curved at the other. This could be a scrap of silver bullion which has been divided according to Viking Age systems of measurement: its mass slightly exceeds one Scandinavian unit of 4.43gms. Were the metal to be identified as silver, the object could qualify as possible Treasure, and is to be submitted to the Treasure process in precautionary vein, ref. 2019 T976. Suggested date: Early…

A complete lead possible gaming piece of the Early Medieval period (AD 850-1100).
The object is a solid, almost arrow shaped object with a roughly flat, slightly concave base. It has five separate ridges running up the sides to form a blunt point at the apex; these ridges are unevenly spaced and sized. The object stands on its own but leans to one side. The object seems to have been produced rather crudely.
This possible gaming piece may have also, or alternatively, functioned as a Viking weight.

Object type: ARM BAND
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published
The silver object is a flattened fragment of penannular arm-ring of Hiberno-Viking type, now in two conjoining pieces. It has the form of a broad flat band of silver of rectangular cross-section, and in plan. The expanded mid-portion of the arm-ring is near the mid-point of the original arm-ring, and tapers to a narrow, fractured end. The production and flattening process has left multiple transverse stress fractures on the outer face of the arm-ring.
The form of the arm-ring, having been hammered (forged) from a silver ingot into a flat expanded band tapering either side of a ce…

Lead possible playing piece. Cast cylindrical object with an indented base arising from casting in an open mould, and with a deeply incised cross on its other end, producing a castellated effect if the object sits on its plainer concave end. Dented and patinated. The distinction of simple pieces is a common requirement of board games. The mass could also admit a secondary or alternative function as a weight representing four Viking Age units of 4.07gms, or one half ora/ore. Early Medieval games which might require such pieces include Hnafetafl, a game of entrapment, which was played b…

Lead probable weight. Cast plano-convex weight with slight shrinkage lines in its flat base, suggesting casting in an open mould. A moulded apical hole of diameter 5mm and depth 1.7mm is blind. Patinated. The mass may suggest this to have represented six Viking-age units of 4.07gms, as used for silver bullion transactions; also amounting to one ore/ora, the contemporary equivalent of an ounce. The form is also well adapted to use on a flat games board, so a dual purpose as weight and gaming piece cannot be ruled out. Reported along with a slightly smaller example from the same broad l…

Cast lead object, possibly an Early Medieval, Viking gaming piece. The object is domed and has an irregular shape with a rough surface on which is a raised cross motif, its underside is flat and shows signs of being open cast in a one piece mould. Diameter 19.4mm, Height 9.0mm, Mass 17.20g.
While this object resembles some of the 'gaming pieces' found on Viking sites its form is atypical and, unless supported by other finds from the site, must be treated with some reservation.

Silver ingot, as kindly identified by the finder. A cast round section pellet of white metal with rounded ends and small hammering marks overall. The form is especially associated with the Viking Age collection and reduction of silver bullion, and this object may contribute to a considerable local corpus of material linked to the Great Army of the 860s and 870s. The pelloidal form is also a characteristic of base metal objects, usually with dark surfaces, which may also have been small ingots. In view of its suspected age and material, the object is to be subjected to the Treasure pro…
