Lead game piece. Cast cone with a rounded basal hollow of depth 4mm and with four symmetrically distributed longitudinal ribs or flanges converging on its apex. Patinated. The ribs may provide a variant of the castellated distinction of a King piece for the game of Hnafetafl. This game of entrapment might be played on a board equipped with peg-holes (as with a 'travel chess set', especially useful on board ship), in which case the basal hollow may have retained a small wooden pin. Most board games can equally be played on any convenient flat surface which is suitably marked, or on the…

An Early Medieval Arabic coin: a fragment of a dirham probably dating from the 7th-9th Century. Other dirhams found in/near this area are SWYOR-879A35, SWYOR-8797D2, SWYOR-5667E6 and SWYOR-89C183, so this example is probably of a similar date. Coins of this type of often found with other objects which suggest an Early Medieval trading site, and so this fragment is probably an ancient loss. Dirhams can also be an indicator of a Viking Great Army camp site. The fragment is 12.6mm long, 11.1mm wide and 0.56mm thick. 0.3g.

Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex object with a small dimple on its convex side. Patinated. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an ore/ora or three Viking Age units of 4.07gms. A conical ribbed playing piece or weight of similar mass (NLM-C98990) was reported as from the same general location, and indeed this object might qualify as one of the plainer pieces used in the game of Hnafetafl. Lead possible playing piece. Cast conical to pentagonal-section flat-based object with five moulded ribs converging at its apex. The ribs may have distinguished this from plainer pieces used in the board game Hnafetafl, perhaps as a 'king'. Its mass also equates to one half ore/ora, or three Viking -Age units as used for transactions in silver bullion, most closely matching that system employed in Scandinavia based on a module of 4.07gms. The object could have served as both weight and game piece, especially if such games were to be played for silver stakes. A slightly heavier version…

A cast lead circular domed object with a flattened top and a flat base, possibly an Early Medieval gaming piece dating from AD 800 - 1000. It has no decoration and a grey patina. It is similar to SWYOR-8B5D84. It is 21.8mm in diameter, 7.2mm thick and weighs 15.3g It is also possible that it is a weight. If so then the mass would suggest half an ounce in the Troy or Apothecaries' weight systems, an ounce being 31.1g, (The Medieval Household, G. Egan, page 302 ). This would date it to the 14th or 15th centuries.

Lead probable weight. Cast flat-based cylindrical weight with a rounded or domed top; lightly indented, patinated overall. The sides appear lightly facetted or indented. The mass might suggest this to have represented 16 [slightly overweight] units of 4.07gms, as used for silver bullion transactions in Viking period Scandinavia, though the correspondence with this module is less exact than is usually deemed necessary for a firm ascription to the period.
