Copper alloy possible game piece; the source record alludes to rust on the base, which might rather suggest a mount detached froma ?scabbard or horse gear?. Ae Viking gaming piece, incised lines, traces of Fe corrosion on bottom. Lead game piece. Cast conical or plano-convex object with flat base, patinated. Dave Haldenby kindly suggests this to be a Viking-Age playing piece for a board game such as Hnafetafl or Tafl. The concentric lines on the flat to concave base might hint at construction of the object by two stages of casting. There are three small pits or dimples near the apex of the conical form, which give the odd impression of a 'smiley' face to the modern observer [inverted in accompanying image]. Tafl required the king to be distinguished from plainer pieces. This object is also of a da…

Lead probable game piece. Cast conical or plano-convex object with a moulded concentric ring and grooves on its convex side; patinated. The finder kindly suggests a function as a weight, though the correspondence of its value with suspected systems of early medieval measurement is only approximate. A similar date may, however, obtain. The moulding may distinguish this piece from others, perhaps to indicate the king from a Hnafetafl set; it may derive from an onion shape used for glass playing pieces, as excavated from graves at Birka. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-…

Lead possible playing piece. A conical object with faint traces of longitudinal ribs on its side, a chamfered or rounded top with a central dimple, and with a small [length 4.5mm] off-centre hole in its base, patinated. The finder kindly suggests a function as a weight, but the mass does not suggest respect for any particular system of measurement. A basal hole might hold a wooden pin for use in a holed playing board while the top may exhibit a worn castellated form. Lead playing piece, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast hollow concavo-convex conical object, slightly dented on one side, patinated. The form allies this to pieces thought to have been used for the board game Hnafetafl, popular in the Viking camps of eastern England. Lead possible game piece. Small cast plano-convex domed object with a basal hole or socket which passes through the object as a tapered aperture, possibly drilled; this may be for an inserted object like a peg. Wooden boards for games were sometime holed to receive pegged pieces. They were used for games like hnafetafl, much favoured in the Viking camps recorded across eastern England. The hole may alternatively be an addition to enable use as a fishing line weight. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Diameter: 15.4mm, Height: 12.9mm, Weight: 11.42gms

A cast lead object, possibly an early medieval, Viking gaming piece. Description: The object is sub-circular in shape with a domed top and concave base. The domed top has an integrally-moulded motif resembling a starburst with irregular "rays" spreading from the apex to the edges of the base. The object shows signs of being open cast in a one piece mould. Measurements: Diameter 22.11mm: Height 9.38mm: Weight 15.01g. Discussion: Kevin Leahy comments "While this object resembles some of the 'gaming pieces' found on Viking sites its form is atypical and, although supporte…

A cast lead possible gaming piece, probably of Early Medieval date, about AD 800 - 1000. It is in the form of a hollow cone, tapering to a sharp point at the apex. The base is almost square. There is no decoration. The piece has a grey-brown patina. Another possible identification is a weight, but it does not match any common weight systems. It is 20.2mm high and 20.3mm in diameter at the base. It weighs 16.5g. A number of similar pieces are recorded on the database: see for example records SWYOR-86BAD5, NLM-948453, GLO-A048E2 and NLM-B35042. LIN-6BFDEB suggests that similar item…

Lead probable gaming piece 5. In the form of a solid round shallow dome 13.2mm high, with a diameter of 20.1mm, and weighs 27.9g. It is irregularly concave on the underside, probably caused by shrinkage during casting. The object has a white patina and, apart from an incised line on the top, which may be post-depositional, is undecorated. Probably of early medieval date. Four other probable gaming pieces were found close by.

Lead possible gaming piece. In the form of a solid round shallow dome 13.2mm high, with a diameter of 20.1mm, and weighs 27.9g. It has a concavity on one side just below the apex, which has seven cut marks radiating from it, possibly where something was inset and subsequently removed? The underside has a small central perforation 2.7mm diameter which is 3.5mm deep and appears too regular to be caused by shrinkage during casting. The object has a grey/white patina and has several scratches and dents, which may be post-depositional. Probably of early medieval date.
