Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped or single looped buckle with an expanded bulbous outer edge on which pronounced radial ribs flank a broad and bordered pin rest, these details appearing on the display side only, and with devolved beast heads gripping the ends of the strap bar. Dave Haldenby kindly considers the beast heads to be more realistically modelled than on other examples in the group and the outer edge to be less expanded - perhaps in its relative thickness [MF]. A spot of rust on the strap bar may hint at the loss of an iron pin, which was presumably attached when the buckle…

A copper alloy buckle frame which is probably from the Early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000. It is probably a Borre style buckle. The frame is D-shaped with a pointed outer edge which is zoomorphic; it has a perhaps Borre-style animal head with curved ears projecting from the frame, incised eyes and a projecting snout forming the pointed terminal, but the details are obscured by corrosion. The bar is straight but narrowed. Two hinge loops project from the bar but the axis bar, plate and pin are missing. The buckle has patches of a bright green patina, but it has mostkly flaked of…

Copper alloy buckle plate, as kindly identified by Dave Haldenby, whose further discussion is rehearsed below in the notes field. Cast zoomorphic plate resembling strap ends of Thomas Class B4, but with rust staining suggesting its intimate association with ironwork at either end. A transversely ribbed and moulded snout has projecting ‘crocodile’ nostrils at its outer end, with twin lugs with a transverse hole clogged by rust beyond them. At the inner end of the ribbing a pair of protruding eyes stand proud of the rest. Beyond this, the plain split end bears the remnants of iron r…

~~A copper alloy (Anglo-Scandinavian?) oval buckle that has a bevelled underside and a zoomorphic protrusion to the front. The forward protrusion compresses of a long narrow triangular point that has two circular knops at the base that represent eyes, this probably represents the head of a bird. The centre of the forward edge is recessed to act as a pin rest. The rear of the buckle is expanded to form an interregnal buckle plate. This has a slot in the forward edge for the pin. To hold the buckle pin in place, in the middle of the slot there is a circular hole that passes form one sid…

An incomplete copper alloy single-looped buckle, of Early Medieval dating (c.AD 800 to c.AD 1100). Around 50% of one of the buckle loop remains with the pin and bar now missing. At the outer edge of the remaining part of the loop is a pointed moulded knop with a zoomorphic terminal consisting of moulded eyes and ears. The reverse of the frame is flat and undecorated. The reverse of the knop is slightly concave. The buckle frame has a brown coloured uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surfa…

A Zoomorphic (Anglo-Scandinavian?) buckle with protruding bird's head and tail. The head has two raised eyes and a tapering flattened beak. The body forms the frame of the buckle and has a single central incised line forming a circle. The tail is triangular, ending in two lobes and decorated with incised lines. Two empty rivet holes and an indented area on the tail underside form an attachment for a belt. A slot on the inside of the frame next to the tail plate would have held the pin. The object measures 47mm length, 26mm width at its widest point and has a thickness of 5.5mm maximu…

Terminal fragment of a buckle frame that has already been recorded in 2007 in CORN-EC5F13 with the description below. The terminal is triangular in plan with a zoomorphic head at the end of the broken frame, which is lozenge-shaped in section. The rounded snout of the snake-like head is slightly longer than its pair at the opposite end of the frame, with very similar circular eye sockets where the inner eye socket is more recessed than the outer socket. At the side of the head, just beside the inner eye socket, there is the beginnings of the strap bar, which is circular in section and…

Cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle with a separate spindle that forms the strapbar. The centre of the forward edge has a large lug that is shaped into an animal facemask. This consists of two large circular bulbous eyes and a crescent on the forward edge for the snout. On the top of the head, on the frame of the buckle is a symmetrical curvilinear moulding. This could represent antlers and may suggest that the animal facemask is depicting a deer. The top edges of the side arms are decorated with rectangular panels. The rear for the frame has a rectangular cross-section with a con…

Cast copper-alloy buckle frame, semi-circular in plan and semi-circular in cross-section, with a flat reverse. The frame was originally D-shaped, like the comparanda below. Only one of the three terminals survives, in the form of a sub-triangular animal head terminal with circular eye sockets which may have originally been settings for a stone. The other two terminals on either side of this one are missing, but would probably have looked the same. The frame is chamfered on the outer edge, but still leaving a flat upper surface which is ornamented with a zigzag pattern, with some…

D-shaped buckle with animal head protruding, Viking, Urnes/Ringerike style. No pin. Helen Geake writes: Although the original description identified this as Urnes/Ringerike style, it seems more like the series of buckles decorated with Borre-style animal heads, as exemplified by the complete example at NLM730.
