Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy probable strap end. Cast tongue-shaped straight-sided plate with a rounded end and a straight end, with five drilled holes symmetrically disposed, probably Thomas Class E. The holes may form a decorative motif but that pair nearest the inner straight end would have permitted stitched attachment at the usual site for such an object. Torn across one of those holes. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Length: 36.8mm, Width: 19.1mm, Thickness: 1.3mm, Weight: 6.55gms

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible weight. Cast trapezoid flat-sided weight. The mass is near-equivalent to a single unit of 4.43gms as is thought to have governed silver bullion transactions in areas under Danish Viking control. Almost all the weights hitherto considered to relate to this system are made of lead, and most represent multiple units, though there is no reason why other materials could not be put to the same use. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 14.5mm, Width: 13.1mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 4.38gms

Lead weight. Cast sub-discoid flat-sided disc with suggestion of a rim on either side, patinated. Form and surface condition could suggest a Roman date. However, the mass equates almost exactly with three Viking Age units of 4.07gms, as are thought to have been used in areas under Danish Viking influence to govern transactions in silver bullion, and perhaps for a period thereafter where such practices had become established. A weight made in the [then] familiar style of a Roman weight but observing Viking weights and measures might point to Anglo-Saxon involvement in its fabrication. S…

Copper alloy strap end. Narrow cast zoomorphic strap end with a moulded beast head terminal with rounded snout and three pairs of curls behind the head, perhaps representing Borre style ‘teddy bear’ ears and other facial features, with faint traces of cross hatching behind the last ears. The inner or belt end is split and broken across two fixing holes, Thomas Class B Type 4. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 42.6mm, Width: 7.7mm, Thickness: 3.8mm, Weight: 4.60gms

Copper alloy ring. Cast ring or finger ring – if the latter then made for a woman or child - constructed by the tight twisting of two drawn copper alloy wires into a single band; one of the wires is itself twisted. Spots of gilding appear trapped. As a finger ring this object would seem penitentially uncomfortable to wear. Copper alloy and iron sword fragment. The pointed wrought iron tip of a broad-bladed sword, retained within a scabbard chape with a pointed end and an openwork display side with a moulded pattern of interlaced strands discerned between oval holes which are partly blocked by rust extruded from the blade. The back is plainer though a border line appears incised along one descending side. The decoration confers an early medieval appearance on an object whose affinities might more usually lie in the later medieval to early post-medieval periods [see notes below]. Suggested date: Early Medi…

Lead, copper alloy and iron weight. Cast cylindrical lead weight with a sub-rectangular copper alloy inset [10mm by 9mm] in its top, and three small [length to 5mm] ferrous metal insets in its side, the latter tested with a magnet. Patinated, with the inset on top smoothed by heavy wear. The mass equates to 6 [actually 5.977 units, which would be deemed acceptably close for a plain lead weight] units of 4.43gms making up one ora/ore according to the Norse system of measurement for bullion, as also observed in their ‘kingdom’ of York and Dublin, under whose rule Lindsey may …

Lead and copper alloy weight. Cast sub-triangular cast lead weight, slightly concave on its longest side, and retaining a sub-triangular copper alloy object of matching form and with a central symmetrical motif. This incorporates two tiny pairs of eye-like discs with a keeled diagonally grooved bar between them, and with splayed pointed ends below. The motif stands 2.4mm proud of a recessed setting confined by its frame, and extensive traces of gilding are trapped within its decoration. The inset measures 25.8mm by 16.5mm. The inset has a broken corner at either end of the longer conca…

Copper alloy strap end. A straight-sided sheet metal plate with a rounded outer end and a straight inner end, a tongue-shaped example of Thomas Class E; sharply folded near its inner end with a large [diameter 5.6mm] round hole next to one of two small rivets which probably served as fixings to a strap. Four casually disposed lines of wedge-shaped stamps appear on the display side of the plate at its rounded end; two short rows divide this zone from the rest, with two short runs of stamps beside it forming a small triangular field. Closely spaced parallel lines running at an angle to t…

Copper alloy strap end fragment. Cast proximal end of a zoomorphic strap end with two stitching holes aligned longitudinally on a slightly splayed straight-sided terminal, and retaining two pairs of moulded eyes under arched brows immediately below. The rest of the object is lost; Thomas Class B type 4. Study by Dave Haldenby and Kevin Leahy may suggest this type to be of Viking affinity but made in Britain, possibly in the Humber region. Copper alloy mount. Cast zoomorphic mount in the form of a beast, perhaps a boar with protruding tapered snout, forward-falling ear and a small mouth agape below, and with powerful hindquarters represented by a large comma-shaped openwork curl with a small hind leg passing over its rearward part. Some detail of the creature’s muzzle appears moulded in low relief on either side. The creature surmounts an integrally cast concavo-convex gutter with a rounded end, and with a slightly flared and longitudinally ribbed socket behind its rump.
