Viking lead gaming piece. It is in the form of a shallow cone in profile and is round in plan, with a well-developed white patination. It measures up to 27.2mm in diameter and is 10.7mm high in the centre, and it weighs 33.9g.
Many similar objects have been found at Torksey (Hadley & Richards, Antiquaries Journal, 2016) and are identified as Viking gaming pieces, and this object has now been inspected by Professors Hadley & Richards and identified as a Viking type.

Small cubic lead weight or die. It measures c8mm square [8.3 x 8.1 x 7.9mm] and weighs 5.17g. It does not appear to have any markings, but it is covered in grey/white patination, and it is possible that there may be some present underneath.
This could be of any date from Roman to post-medieval, but it came from a site where other early medieval artefacts have been found, so could possibly be a Viking weight and may be 9th century in date.

Early medieval lead gaming piece in the form of a leaning cone with an asymmetrical roughly hexagonal base and a flattened top, 21.0mm high and a maximum of 21.8mm wide at the base, with a weight of 55.9 grams. The object has a hole of c5mm diameter centrally located in the concave base which may extend through the piece, as there is a hole at the top, offset to one side but in the same plane due to the aforementioned lean. As the hole is filled with hardened white material from a point 9mm up from the base and 6mm down from the top, it is not possible to say whether it is completely …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible early medieval Thor's hammer pendant. The item measures 38.5mm in height, and the hammer head is 14.6mm wide. The shaft is tapered from a maximum width of 5.9mm at the head to 3.4mm at the top, and the overall thickness is 4.5mm, although it tapers towards the top. There is a probable break at the top as there is no suspension loop, but the object is badly worn so this is uncertain.
It has a well developed green patination.
If this is a representation of Mjolnir or Thor's hammer then it will date from c873 - 950

A lead gaming piece of early medieval date. It is round in plan and is in the form of an asymmetrical cone which measures 21.8mm in height and 29.7mm in diameter, and weighs 74.3g. It has a perforation in the base which extends 20mm up through the centre, but there is no corresponding hole at the apex - as the asymmetry could have been caused by the object being struck, a hole may have been present originally. The thick covering of patination means that it is not possible to be sure without destructive testing.
It is white in colour with a uniform and well-developed patination.

Iron prick-spur, very corroded with major surface loss. The sides of the spur are of unequal length (one is c.54mm and the other c.64mm) but would presumably have been symmetrical originally, and both have loss at the ends, with no terminals and therefore no indication remaining of how it would have been attached to the wearer's boot. The sides are of rhomboid cross section and form a u-shaped curve in plan, and taper from a maximum thickness of c11.5mm at the inner junction with the neck of the goad, to around 3.5mm at the ends. The sides are straight in section and are attached to t…

Complete cast lead early medieval gaming piece, or possible weight. The item is in the form of a rounded cone with a flattened top. It has a maximum diameter of 18.5mm and a height of 11.1mm, with a flat base with a narrow circumferential lip extending around 1 to 2mm, and a slightly raised 9mm diameter circular projection at the top. It is solid, with a slight casting concavity in the middle of the base, and weighs 20.8 grams.
It is thought probable that this is a Viking gaming counter and can therefore be dated to AD. c.850-1000.
A similar example is in 'British artefacts volu…

Cast lead weight in the form of an 8.0mm thick flat disc with bevelled sides, which is slightly pear-shaped in plan, with a maximum diameter of 31.5mm. The upper face has a vaguely geometric pattern of a trellis of grooved lines interspersed with rounded pellets in relief, but the design is so worn that it is not possible to discern what it is supposed to represent. Perforated gaming piece of early medieval date. It is cone shaped and stands 21mm high and the roughly triangular base is around 21mm across at the widest; the central hole is 8.5mm in diameter. Weighs 20.6 grams.
It is probable that the top has been deliberately removed at some point, as the top surface is irregular where it appears to have been hit, presumably in antiquity as the break is covered by the same cream/white patination as the rest of the object.
