An Early Medieval gold tremissis of Madelinus type imitating the coins minted in Dorestad by the moneyer Madelinus, dating AD 625-675. The coin has been converted into a pendant. Ref: Grierson and Blackburn 1986: nos 493-5; Pol 2010. The obverse depicts a bust in profile, facing right. The inscription reads DRESTATFIT [Made in Dorestad]. Obverse description: Quilled crescent with pellet ends to quills, a separate row of pellets, a curved line, and two bars below a triangle and pellet 'eye'. Reverse description: Neat standard with central annulet, inner and outer beaded frames; though described as 'degenerate TOT [etc.]' (Abramson 2006, pages 86-7), the inner framing does not appear derivative of lettered forms. Diameter: 11.2mm, Weight: 0.87gms.
