Part of a Early Early-Medieval buckle plate, of Aquitanian-Frankish type. The piece is part of a flat plate with downturned edges giving a hollow back and now slightly bent in from each side. One end is complete and straight with two broken projecting rectangular bars which would have connected to the frame. A composite early-medieval gold, garnet and green glass cloisonné mount, possibly from a buckle. Description: The mount is sub-triangular in form. It comprises a gold frame, constructed from a sheet gold back-plate to which have been soldered gold strips, set edge-on, to create four cells: three hemispherical cells arranged around a central triangular cell. The hemispherical cells are inlaid with red stones, probably garnets, and the triangular cell is inlaid with green glass. Copper alloy buckle plate. Cast plate of trefoil form and of 0.9mm thickness with three dome headed rivets to attach plate to strap, and a slot for the pin [which is lost, as is the frame]. An intact and in situ rivet has a head of diameter 9.2mm and a rivet [including head] c.6mm long. A second rivet is now detached, and has a head of 9.4mm diameter and a shank of length 6.6mm. An incomplete Early-Medieval (possibly Frankish) single looped buckle (c. 450-c. 600 AD). The pin is missing. This oval frame is convex at the front and bevelled at the rear. On the upper surface, the sides and outside edge are decorated with transverse grooves. In plan, the centre of the outside edge is slightly indented. It has a narrowed bar, oval in cross-section. At the centre of the bar there is an area of wear that was created by the pin loop. This buckle has a patchy dark green and mid-brown patina with areas of active corrosion.
