Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast head of a small cruciform brooch comprising a plain sub-rectangular field with a central trapezoid panel, and with a collared half round top knop. The stub of a U-shaped pin seat remains behind the head with a trace of rust below it suggesting the loss to decay of an iron pin. Fiercely abraded. The half round and integrally cast knob points to insular [i.e. in Britain] manufacture, though the small size might commend a use more akin to that of a small long brooch than a cruciform brooch of larger size. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600 Height: …

Gold and gemstone scabbard mount fragment. Cast gold ‘sword pyramid’ comprising two conjoined trapezoidal sides and a square framed top, now flattened in the manner of a flat-pack and perhaps originally formed as a flat sheet cut and folded to shape – if so, the mount would have been both hollow and fragile. The larger and more complete side [with longest edge of 18.3mm] has a triple border of cabled or twisted gold wire. The edge of the outermost strand is also visible from the bac…
