A copper alloy cast chip carved mount, probably of early medieval origin. It is circular, with a circular border around the outside face. Within this is a design which comprises of representations of possibly four, intertwined animal hybrids. The bodies of the animals are formed of three contoured lines, interlaced in a square in the centre of the field. At one end of the sinuous bodies, towards the outside of the field, is what may be a head, formed of a curve with each end curled, and an eye underneath with further contoured lines defining the face. In between these ar…

Copper alloy probable mount fragment. A small irregular object with an integral pin or lug of diameter 2.9mm projecting from its back. What remains of the mount itself now resembles the emaciated snout of a tiny wolf with jaws agape wearing a bowl-shaped helmet of modern style with an incised line at its rim, but with ears projecting to either side - the maker’s intention was perhaps different to the effect described. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 410-800 Length: 10.6mm, Width: 8.2mm, Thickness (overall including lug): 8.3mm, Weight: 2.18gms

Traces of gilding remain across the surface. The central perforation is set within a raised arched border with a small portion of the back plate projecting within. The perforation likely acts as a setting for a separ…

Copper alloy, silver and iron mount. Triangular copper alloy plate of copper alloy with a rounded raised edge surrounding a sunken silvered or inset plate bearing zoomorphic decoration in Salin Style 1 (information kindly proferred by Dr Kevin Leahy). The back of the object is rust-coated and this points to its having been detached from an iron setting. The inset motif originates as a distorted triskele at its wider end. There is a small probable beast head terminal to its shortest curling arm which encloses an eye-like curl and pellet; the second branch is crooked below the first to r…

A cast copper alloy gilded rectangular mount of early medieval (early Anglo Saxon, c. 6th century AD) date. The front has a chip-carved zoomorphic motif of Salin style I framed by a heavy linear border.  The interlaced ornament presents an elongated beast, with a body indicated by two sinuous curves of triple-ridged ribbon and with two curved limbs with four claws below. At the right / top end is a prominent eye within a D-shaped head, which has its jaws indicated by a line angled perpendicular to the long axis of the plate (so the beast perhaps faces either&nb…

Copper alloy possible mount fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A narrow cast D-section or plano-convex strip with a possible collar at one end separating it from a narrow concavo-convex ‘bowl’, a feature which might suggest a function as a small recent cruet spoon. However, white metal plating [or gilding - see below] appears only on the convex side of the object, confirming its placement as a mount with the flat side against its setting. Darkened by treatment with oil by the finder. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 750-850 Length: 23.6mm, Width: 7.6mm, Thickness (at…
