A broken copper-alloy strap end of Early-Medieval date, about AD 750 - 950. The strap end is of Thomas' Class A, probably Type 1 with a Trewhiddle style design and a zoomorphic terminal. The strap end is sub-ovate with a zoomorphic terminal at the closed end. The attachment end is missing. The central design appears to be curvilinear interlace with traces of niello, but it is corroded making it difficult to decipher. The zoomorphic terminal is in the form of a forward facing animal head with moulded features including curved ears (that look like horns), oval eyes, an…

A copper alloy anthropomorphic artefact of probable Early Medieval date, AD 400 - 600. It is a sub-triangular shape in plan with a straight (but broken) top, parallel upper sides, and lower sides that taper inwards to a rounded end. The front is moulded into a human face with a plain forehead, bulbous eyes in rounded concave areas, an angular projecting nose, and curved lines running from the base of the nose up around the eye sockets. An oval dimple in the pointed end may be intended as a mouth, or may be damage. The face is convex and three dimensional. The reverse is …

The plate has got at least three large ring and dot motifs. there are no perforations. On the reverse are two rectangular scars, equally spaced along the plate. A cast copper-alloy incomplete Early Medieval small-long brooch dating from AD 450 - 550. The rectangular headplate is simply a flat sheet of plain metal. The corner are damaged, so it is unclear if there were recesses. The plate does not appear to have any punched decoration. AT the top of the bow is a flat facet, then two incised transverse lines. The bow is plain and has a faint central vertical arris on the front, making the front into two facets, and is triangular in cross-section. There are two incised lines across the base, then another flat panel with two further…

Two fragments of a cast copper alloy early-medieval brooch, either a cruciform or a small-long brooch probably dating from AD 420 - 550. They are probably from the same brooch. One piece is the corroded head of the brooch with the top part of the bow.  The head is an incomplete plate with a rounded upper edge. The headplate appears sub-circular in shape although it is likley that it would have been rectangular with knops on either side. There would have been a slot to accept the strap, but the lower flange has broken away at the join with the body. The strap end then tapers gently to a blunt point. The underside is undecorated. An incomplete Trewhiddle style Early Medieval copper alloy strap end of Thomas Class A dating from AD 750 - 950. The attachment end is incomplete. The closed end is worn, but zoomorphic with drilled eyes, one containing surviving silvering or niello, and looped ears. The body of the strap end has convex sides and a recessed central panel which contains a looped design in relief. This does not appear to be a zoomorphic design and is perhaps geometric. No exact parallel for the central panel is found in Thomas (2000), though it fits broadly into Class A. There is an iron rivet inter…
