Only the headplate and part of the bow has survived. The headplate comprises a trefoil head with three projecting sub-rectangular lobes with semi-circular cut aways at each angle. The bow springs from the headplate; it has a D cross-section and is decorated on the convex side with oblique indentations where the bow meets the headplate, creating a trapezoidal block at the upper portion of the bow. A central raised band extends from the block. The bow terminates with a very worn and broken end. On the reverse of the headplate is the pin lug that is covered in iron corrosion indicating the use of an iron pin, which is now missing. The brooch is very worn and corroded.

The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment. Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The surface, especially at the back, appears bubbled and damaged by heat, which in the context of an early Anglo-Saxon brooch might often be taken to indicate it has passed through the fire of a cremation. A possibly associated object, perhaps even its continuation, was reported as from the same location, but is more severely heat-damaged than this fragment. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 410-600

It comprises a rectangular plate/bar with integrally cast decorative plate at the rear edge, part of which is now missing due erosion in the ground. The bar has flat, square terminals at each end with a similar square panel at the centre, each separated from one another by recessed and constricted sections that have moulded transverse decoration, one of three lines, the other of two lines. At the centre of the front edge is a small projecting rectangular lobe that has a rear-facing, curved rectangular hook. The rear edge of the clasp has an integral decorative plate that is flattened and has a moulded wavy outer edge that produces three projecting lobes, with probable forth or fifth lobes now missing due to old breaks. Two circular sewing holes are visible on this decorative plate, both positioned next to the constricted moulded sections of the bar. The back face of the clasp is flat and undecorated. The entire object has a dark green patina.
It is of Anglo-Saxon date, probably belonging in the late-5th to 6th centuries (c.AD 450-570).Hines B204747114505704PUBLIC2024-01-26T00:00:00Z2024-02-07T21:54:44Z2024-02-12T09:35:19Z3PAS65C3FC24001FCF1123517121211594253815317LincolnshireEast LindseyWest AshbyTF267353.23908519-0.11346807bands.shops.handy10PUBLIC-3FCAD1Copper alloy10627CastIncompleteGoodEARLY MEDIEVALx41022EarlyEarlyEARLY MEDIEVALx41022x41022Anglo-Saxon stylex41012Metal detectorReturned to finderPUBLIC-3FC24F_65c60b7ba2160.jpg1262352images/kwoodw/Certain12024-02-12T09:35:19.771Zfinds-11494441149444NLM-385C00PINEARLY MEDIEVALCopper alloy pin head.
